Uhmmm I guess I was never under the impression that Richard was lead singer of The Temptations. Am I missing something? I knew he sang lead on a couple of songs but not like Dennis or Ali did. I think these Temptations splinter groups are worst than the many Platters groups that are touring. I hate that it has come to this.

It looks like they are appearing in a foreign country... Australia? (NSW = New South Wales?) so they are probably safe from the lawyers.

I thought Richard was definitely a lead singer of the Temptations. He sang Firefly and he sang "My Girl" in concert...Just about every CD they put out in the 80s and 90s had a Richard lead. Of course he was a lead singer of the Temptations.

I considered him a lead singer of the Temptaions, kind of filling the third lead like Paul did. Jonel you have done it again. I going to have you checked out cause I know you have all ready got the goods on us!!!!!

I never considered Richard a "lead" singer. I considered Eddie, Paul, David, Dennis, Damon leads but never Richard. All the times I saw Richard in concert with The Temptations not once did he sing lead on anything.

Kim, checkout the video from Harrah's and the one from London. He sings leads on both of those. He does a wonderful rendition of "Heavenly" on the Live from London, 1989 video.

Mike I love Glenn's voice. Jonel I will look into that. I saw the Temptations 4 or 5 times while Richard was in the group he didn't sing lead. Dennis sang most of the leads and the last 3 times I saw them Ron and Ali sang most of the leads.

Yes Kim there were periods when Richard has sung a lot of leads. When Hey Girl....and Heavenly were in the rotation along with My Girl, Isn't the Night Fantastic,Oh What A Night.

Second from left.
It's in an English speaking country. And from the picture it looks like a warm climate.
But the picture reminds me of an ABA comment about Dennis, "He had three chances."
Richard's decision to leave was his. I can guess; you can guess, but the decision was his. Just as it was Ali's decision to sing at a nightclub and miss a Temptations' performance. And it was Theo's to use drugs. And blah, blah, blah.
I've made wrong decisions, but I don't blame anyone else for them. And I hate people who always want to blame someone else for what is their own decision.
I'm reminded of an extremely successful coach whose first remarks to a team at the beginning of the season have to do with choices. If you want to be on that team, if you want to stay on that team, you must make choices. You don't miss practice unless you're ill, and you really better be ill. You don't miss a game; you take care of academic courses (if you're in school), and so forth. There are ethics involved, and you better meet them. You make the right choices and that coach will be behind you all the way. You make the wrong choices, and you're off the team.
So while I am glad former Temptations are making a living, I am saddened by the plethora of groups singing as "Temptations" and saddened that they did not realize how good they had it when they had the chance.
But what really irks me is that most of them would not admit it was their fault. Instead of saying "I wish I had not made that mistake, I wish I had realized how good I had it," they blame it all on someone else or some other factors. "I didn't go to college because my parents didn't have enough money."

In an interview, Richard does say that he was "forced to leave" and admits being "underpaid". The article also mentions that there was a "deep artistic rift" between Richard and Otis. I also agree with Richard that being a Temptation for 30 years demands respect; recognition. Because of artistic differences, financial reasons, drugs/alcohol, irresponsibility, even death.........men who performed with Otis Williams as Temptations are no longer employed. But that doesn't mean that they cease to offer entertainment, creativity, enjoyment. Otis owns the name. He has history and talent and longevity. But, these former Temptations have much to offer. They have every right to continue to pursue their dream. They are not just "making a living"...they are giving pleasure to the audience; to their fans by doing something that gives them satisfaction and doing it the way they see fit. Did you ever stop and think that maybe what they had, wasn't so good? Richard says it was bad. I'm reading this and thinking. 30 years. 30 years of performing as a Temptation. There is NO way I would pretend to know and understand what Richard knows and understands. There is NO way I could. www.sptimes.com/News/41699/Alive/The_tempestuous_times.shtml

Kim, I think if you looked at the 70's albums, you'd find Richard with as many leads as Ali had in the '80s and '90s. Or in other words, what Jonel said. Do you consider Terry a lead singer? The're kinda on the same level. And Jonel's got a point. If you saw the Tempts perform with while Dennis was in the group, you AT LEAST saw him sing lead on "My Girl." You don't remember Dennis doing it do you? (Hope you don't take this as being argumentative, just trying to plead poor Richard's case.) ................ As long as there's a dude up there in the group that *I* consider to be a Temptation, I'm cool with it. It's a pleasure to hear any of them perform. Jane, that photo's been around a while. I think it's one that Richard's group uses for publicity. I'm assuming it was taken here in the US.
