I think that's the same thing. Are you drinking again? I'm just playing, about the drinking part, but seriously it is the same thing. I don't think you can be classified as a singer of soul music without having the vocal styling of a soul singer, unless, you're Celion Dion who is covering a soul tune, then that is something totally different. Ount drank!!!!!!! Seriously though not exactly the same thing. This won't be your favorite example but Terry Weeks is a balladeer thats why he stinks at the Dennis Edwards stuff. Sam Cooke was a crooner Ali Woodson is a soul singer. Its always been my position that a serious soul singer brings that grit and gut. Ali, GC Dennis Louis they could all take the same song and give you a performance that would be typified as soulful. Luther Vandross did what could be called a masterful cover of Since I lost my baby excellent I loved it!!! But he did it in his balladeers style no way in this lifetime he could have brought the soulful expressions David did. Ali doing Cloud nine works, Dennis doing Lady Soul works Terry doing either sucks. You see something more than the song makes a singer a soul singer. I've never heard Terry do Dennis' stuff so I can't comment on that. Luther Vandross is a soul singer. Just because Luther didn't sing it the way David did still doesn't mean he's not a soul singer. Terry doing either to you doesn't work and maybe to others. But he has a soul voice, it's not a pop voice. It's the voice that makes a singer a soul singer. Luther's voice was soulful, it wasn't what you would call a pop voice. Soul music translates into black music. And who sings soul music mainly black people. I know Michael Mcdonald has a soul voice and so did the Righteous Brothers, they sounded like black singers or soul singers. Now can you be black and have a pop voice, yeah perfect example would be Diana Ross. Smokey Robinson and Eddie Kendricks are considered soul singers and they don't give the soulful expressions of Ruffin. There's something called the softer side of soul and Terry Weeks, Luther Vandross, Smokey Robinson, and Eddie Kendricks, all sing it and of course there are others, Eugene Record, The lead singer of Blue Magic,The Delfonics lead singer, (I think his name is William Hart) and there are others as well.

No I'm afraid I have to disagree on that my friend just because the artist is black doesn't mean its soul music. Lionel Richie doing Dancing on the Ceiling(Pop) aint nobodies soul music anymore than Michael Jackson doing Beat It(Pop Rock). Soul music is style plain and simple. Terry Weeks is a balladeer whom I'd probably like if he weren't a Temptation. As soulful as Luther Vandross voice is its only soulful within the framework of his singing stlye he is not and cannot be categorize as a 'Soul" singer. That is in no way shape form or fashion on the guy who is arguably one of the greatest singers ever. Furthering my point, take gospel artist many of them sing in many different styles some considered as soulful, Marvin Winans comes immediately to mind. Its the way they sing what they sing. Because of the way he sings he could do what GC Ali Dennis do just the way this brother sees it.

Let's simplify things a bit.
A "soul singer" is someone who primarily performs soul music.
What is "soul" music?
Soul is a genre of American music that came to the forefront in the late-1950s/early-1960s. Performed primarily -- but not exclusively -- by African-Americans, soul music evolved from a combining of blues and a secular form of gospel. It's generally characterized by prominent bass and rhythm lines and, vocally, by raw and intense expressions of passion and emotion relating to themes of love, heartache, personal struggle and triumph.
At least, that's how I'd define it.
To me, Luther Vandross was a R&B/Pop vocalist who dabbled in soul...more Mariah Carey than Wilson Pickett.
How's that?

I hear what ya'll saying, but I never said because the artist is black that it means that it is soul music, I thought my Diana Ross example would've made that clear. But anyway, back in the days the R&B charts were also referred to as the soul charts. Me personally I wouldn't call Luther a pop artist, when I hear him he sounds like a soul singer. And all those black singers I mentioned before are classified as soul singers. Michael Jackson can sing Rock/Pop/Soul. Michael Jackson has won multiple awards for favorite Male Vocalist under the category of soul, because he's also considered a soul singer. I know every black singer isn't a soul singer, but Mike is considered a singer of Pop/Rock/Soul.
