Well,Jane,I'm the one who KNOWS that the group don't sound as good or perform as good as when the REAL Temptations were alive,so I guess we kinda agree on that, the only difference is,you don't care WHAT five voices you hear,as long as you see Otis, because you don't HEAR him unless he is speaking. If it weren't for those voices that you say are unimportant, where in the world do you get the harmony from? You fail to realize is that the HOF6 was the harmony and NOBODY can re create it,NOBODY. I heard some junk about building the harmony around Otis, that is insane to say the least. I mean the trouble people go thru to try to justify Otis's contribution to the group ,makes me laugh. It's NOT like that, but you know this, you have to if you pay attention to the shows you go to. Those "Lead voices will live forever,so face it,if not for them ,you would not be listening to R& B ! And not know it. And that's the truth! Those Motown people LIED to you, believe your ears, and your ears don't agree with your statement! When it comes time for O's voice to make the sound "unique" as you put it,then the Tempts are in trouble.......BIG TIME ! And did you mention dancing? I didn't think so,we all know better! And that's the truth! Mikey you stinker :bonk: Jane great review, I can't wait to get back to see the tempts/Review do their stuff. Its 115 today and getting hotter..almots hot as the Tempts at the Majestic

I forgot to mention that GC sang "My Girl." He sang it straight a la the earliest recording. There was none of this, "You all know the song. C'mon and sing it" business. There was no audience participation.
And at the end, GC simply said, "My Girl" as a statement. When Ron introduced it, he introduced it as the Temptations anthem.
It's interesting that all the actors in the mini-series said their favorite song was "Just My Imagination." And that Leon said the one disappointment he had in playing David was that he didn't get to sing "Just My Imagination."
I wonder which song will emerge as the popular favorite in the next 40 years. In some ways I think "Just My Imagination" is the better song and that "My Girl" was made immortal by Robert White's guitar licks.

People will listen to Ruffin's song for the next 100 years! Just My Imagination is a great song ,too! GC has to get the hang of singing it before he puts his personality into it! And by the way,Ruffin did a fantastic job when he encourages the people to"We can all sing this one",and he was right. We would never be able to do that by listening to Robert White! Wait until GC gets comfrotable,he will add his style!

I love it when Ruffin sings "sing along with me right now" right before "I guess you'd say..." I'm betting a lot of that got started when the group noticed that the audience was already singing along .

If that's what you thought my dear, then YOU were not paying attention! I want them to put their own flavor to the song. Like Dennis did when he replaced Ruffin! Like David Sea does when he sings"I Wish It Would Rain",don't you remember me saying that?

I think Kalisa has a point that the "singing along" with "My Girl" came about when the Temptations realized the audience wouldn't stop singing with them. Also with "Just My Imagination." The Tempts gave up and let the audience sing.
But I also think David was a bit lazy and would take the easy way out. We'll never know if Eddie would have taken the same path with "Just My Imagination" because the song had just been released when he left. And if we see Eddie letting the audience sing at the end, well......he was very ill.
I prefer the Temptations singing over hearing the audience, but I too have given up and just turn to my records to hear "My Girl" sung sincerely.
Believe me, neither those audience participators on the stage nor the audience itself does justice to the song. But for many people participation is part of the experience. To each his own.
I don't know why anyone would think suggesting "Just My Imagination" might be a better song was taking a shot at David Ruffin. Heavens to Betsy, some people will go to any extent to feel attacked.
I'd like to know which of his songs Norman Whitfield liked the best. And I'm not talking just about the ones he did with the Temptations. And which songs of those he wrote, did Smokey like the best.
I suspect both are like Ado Annie. "When I'm not near the [song] I love' I love the [song] I'm near."

The average person who attends a Temptation concert is not nearly the serious tempaholics we are. They may know only a few of the songs and it is indeed a chance to sing along with some great tunes. Because we break down, disect, critic every song they made, we are always looking for the perfect rendition of the song we like. The only perfect renditions are all ready on vinyl and cd. Go to the show and enjoy what you see and hear. Get into the fact that the people who go are maybe seeing and hearing the songs for the first time in a long time. I know when I went to see the review, everybody was standing up, singing and Temptation walking and I didn't hear one bad word in the house about who sang what and how it was sung! It was the way "I" like to see a show, like Ivory on my feet and moving and singing along. I think that's what a live performance should be about....kind of like a celebration.
