"...but I felt that was put in there to try to help explain some of David's rebellion against rules and perhaps some of his later life choices as a victim of abuse..."I understand...but the natural inference the viewer draws from "my mama owed a pimp a whole lot of money, so she gave me to him instead" is that his mother was a prostitute. It's hard to assume otherwise...and that's not flattering to anyone. I agree with you that the true story would've been just as compelling and effective in making the point.

Yes, that's what I meant by gratuitous...gratuitous over-dramatization when the truth would have been just as effective in getting the point across...without defaming an innocent and by all accounts good woman/women (his Mama and Step-mother both, since the movie didn't make a distinction). The truth was a sorry enough story without adding a hint of prostitution into the mix.

Hey ya'll. Well I'm a new fan & was introduced to the Temps 3-4 weeks ago cause I caught the movie on VH1 so I believed everything in it. Now I come here( & to other sites) to find out that Davids mama giving him to a pimp wasn't true!! I'm shocked, I honestly I bought it hook line & sinker (no offense to his parents). Now that scenes really gonna piss me off. But, before I found that out, I happen to know for a fact David died in a hopspital of drug overdose; therefore the scence were his body is thrown out of a car looking like he was tsabbed or shot in the head & then Otis says his body wasn't identified till a week later....I think that was a HORRIBLE untrue scence to out in the movie, absolutely un-neccisary!! Making David look like trash, thats....no words to describe how mad that made/makes me. That's the scence i'd change. As for a line I'd change... Otis saying "Whoever said success makes you who you really are, must've had David in mind". That line, much like the scence, ticks me off to no end. I refuse to believe that's who David really was....I say the damn drugs did that to him & that no matter what anyone says, deep down he still had a kind soul, big heart, & was a tremendous human being!! Sorry, little defensive I know. But, what can I say, look at my user name & you'll get the idea. I have no hate towards Otis by the way, I highly respect that man. Oh, one thing though. No I don't wanna change another scence or line, just a thought. Again no hate towards Otis, I'm just wondering. Why did Otis(the group in general) help Paul & not david? They got him help, put him in a hospital/rehab, willingly waited for him to get better & come back to the group, they didn't fire him/kick him to the curb. But, they just dropped David!! Didn't get him help for his drug addiction!! What's that about? Was Paul for some reason more special then David?! I have no hate towards Paul either, I just don't think what they did to david was very nice. And if the part in the movie is true were Davids back stage with them & is straight(off drugs) & begging to be let in, why the hell didn't they?! they were gonna let Paul back in when he got better? Was it Davids ego?! Explain to me please!! Email me. *Krystal.S

The movie gave hints to Otis being jealous and resentful toward David's attitude and ways. It seems as if he found working with David difficult. As for Paul........ they were there from the beginning.....

Was it Davids ego?! Explain to me please!! Email me. *Krystal.S Welcome aboard!!!!!! First it is great to see another young fan who is interested in the Temptations. My advice to you first is to get as much reading material as possible so you can make your own decision as to what you believe or not. None of us here knows the real story but we have pretty much taken the movie for what it is, just that, a movie. It is a great jumping off point to get into the TEmptations and many of the members here got their start just as you did. Before you go off the deep end one way or another understand that the movie was based loosely off Otis Book. A script written and submitted by a scriptwriter and "poetic license" so to speak taken to make the movie work. There are so many inaccuracies in there that it would take me way too long to name them all but suffice it to say that the even his best friend Melvin was dipicted as dying in his mother's kitchen when in fact he died a horrible death and it was not revealed until much later on in the second revised version of Otis book, I, myself knew how Melvin passed away before the movie and even though I knew the movie had it wrong, I didn't take exception to it. After finally seeing something done that could be saved for posterity, I was happy. There was no documentary on the Temptations and there may never be one. So if this is all we have, then I'm glad we have something. David Ruffin was a great singer but he was hell to work with, many have said. He did a lot of the things that happened to him to himself and wether he was fired or quit, died in the crack house or in the hospital, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that it was another sad chapter in the story of the Temptations and we lost one hell of a singer. there are books all over the net by Tony Turner and Geena Sapian that speak to the life of David Ruffin and former Temptation Richard Street and former musical director Cornelius Grant are supposed to coming out with books that should shed even more light on this story. Good luck in your research!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

True, Paul was there from the beginning but.....ah again I'm just deffensive(see user name). And research I shall, I know it's just a movie & God I love it & am so happy to have it. It's certainly better then having nothing on the group we love. Yes "poetic liscense" I know, I know...but; it's just a horrible, horribley sad scene & again my David defenses here but I just don't think that since he didn't die like that that scene should've been put in ther. But I except the movie(& that scence & the dinner table scene) for what it is & love it. Besides, no matter how David died his soul & music lives on, through the Temptations & on its own =D

Many groups don't have half as much info on them like the Temps do. If you can make a great movie that attracts more fans, and books about the group then I think you have one of the most greatest, legendary groups of all time!!!

I would let more recognizable actors play the supporting roles, Then I would be it on the big screen!

You know it's a good thing u said supporting roles & not lead roles cause I was gonna wanna hit u if you said lead roles cause Leon, Terron, Christian, Db & Charles all did fine, Oscar worthy performances!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't replace one of them with someone else!! =D

Oh hell naw. That would just be plain outta the question. I would never replace them. I just think that if you put some recognizeable to play folks like Flynn, or Otis' mom then that would enhance the movie more. That's all!!
