albany georgia couldn't be any farther from albany new york if it was in south africa, the home of apartheid for many years. white juniors in albany georgia are having a whites only private prom in columbus georgia ,50 miles away. i believe the south has still a long way to go before people of color are given proper respect. i hope the music short circuits and the punch bowl backs up. WHERE THE HECK ARE THE PARENTS AND THE BOARD OF EDUCATION? probably waxing the jockeys on their front lawns.

Aww, this is not good. Well, I don't know if it's just a southern thing. I think it's just a small mined backwards thing. There are people around here who think the same way, they just have more scrutiny that will be placed upon them. Wow, sukka, this is a sad story.

That's just the South? I didn't know racism was just a southern thing.
I say that if the prom was privately funded, let them have it. I consider it like a party; probably some place the non-whites wouldn't want to go to anyway.

I just wrote this to, sukka, but I believe it to be true. this country practices too much tolerance. we are taught to be tolerant of things that are different. we are taught to put up with them. but when it comes to race, gender, ability and lack there of, and etc we don't need to be tolerant. tolerant is for little kids and homework. as far as people are concerned we need to show peace, passion, love, kindness and acceptance. you can tolerate but so much. but you when you accept people, then the world becomes better. this country and the world tolerates, but it never embraces and loves.
There is a line from Remember The Titans which I think it very prophetic. "I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred distroyed my family." This to me is what tolerance gets you. Love, man. That's all. Now, I know I'm not perfect and I have my own prejudices. But I also know that I love people for who they are. I also hope that they stand for something better than which goes beyong tolerance. I guess the only people who need to be tolerated, are those who won't show the love and respect for others.
Now, IRLM, I see what you are saying, but these young people dislike people of color. And this will not serve well when they get older. It won't serve well for them or for others. Because in this society as well as in the world, we have the power to help or hurt. We have the power to employ, to make laws and statutes. These young people may decide to one day not hire or make unfair statutes or lobby for people to nor hire or make unfair law and statutes. These young people might end up not having work because of thier beliefs. They may even do worse because of thier beliefs. So, it's not just a party. It's a life style that is of concern.

Sukka, I mean this more seriously than ANYTHING I've ever said to you........ you need to CHILL with that argument REAL QUICK!!! Check out what's happening in your own backyard .......... www.kpbs.org/tv/culture_of_hate/splash.htmbefore you start pointing fingers. THIS ENTIRE COUNTRY has a long way to go before people of color are treated with respect. No one region has the monopoly on that.

Ivory is right. the entire country and world need a serious change of mind. the world has been a mean place for a long time. It's high time for a change. as liberal as people claim to be in my area they say such terrible racial things, which they say they don't mean as offensive. but in reality it's what they truly feel. why? because they tolerate instead of trying to love and understand.
But Ivory, i think he may have only been addressing the south because that's where the incident happened. I'm sure he know's that the entire world is prejudice and that things need to change.

Ivory, my mom is a african american studies professor and has been for nearly 30 years. She sees the world a bit differently than I do. But again my mom has been on the other harsher end of racism. But the main thing we agree on is that tolerance is not a solution. Tolerance ins a cop out. It's an excuse not to change. Because a person tolerates something doesn't mean that person wants it around. I tolerate taxes.
the point being is that the world is sick and I am the cure. just kidding. But for real, the world really does need some love and acceptance.

Well Self, your Mom and my Dad would get along fine. He's a "race-mixing, outside agitating" socialist and has been for 60 years. But yeah ........ that's one of Jane's main points. She did a show on Oprah years ago (changed my life) where a white person got up and said that she belived in tolerance and Jane ripped her a new one! Love? How's this?

I read your site for Jane. It's cool. I tolde on of my teachers at Temple University that tolerance is a cop out and she was socked as sugar. then I told her why. I told her that if she tolerates, she isn't making room for change. All tolerance is, is putting up with. Tolerance in no way shape or form changes a persons view of others. I see toleramt people all they time and they are the biggest racists. They are just tolerant. I see tolerant people who are the biggest sexists. though I must say, I've never seen a racist who isn't sexist. tolerant people are biggots, they hate disabled people, different races, sexes, religion, sexual orientation. Tolerance is just a way to pick up your paycheck and not be called a biggot.

Of course, I'm my mama's baby, so i'll call somebody a biggot if they are. I just tell them that they are tolerant and I tell them things that I tolerate. And the things I tolerate are the things I don't like.
Lov-er-ly Lady, I must bid you a fair goodbye. I will see you tomorrow, I'm sure.

"My Soul Is Rested" by Howell Raines (close up) Rosa Parks, MLK and Ivory's Dad WAY in the background He says that "Rosie" called him when he broke his foot so badly last fall but I keep telling him "that was the drugs Dad!"

way to go reverend! a true lover of people !
first of all, nobody on this board has been implicated or been insinuated to be of the same persuasion as the folks in that albany georgia situation.
second of all, 15 miles north of me is fallbrook california , where tom metzger lived-the founder of aryan nation white supremacy group. he's rotting in jail with his boys for ordering killings in oregon and other states of blacks and latinos.
lakeslime as it's known is the armpit of san diego-but you'll find racists all over everywhere. however, most of the history of black -white conflict has been concentrated in the south. MLK didn't march in sacramento, ivory. jim crow wasn't in brooklyn it was in nashville. so don't give me the mean face. i didn't create the incident. by the way, i have 2 aunts in nyc who are daughters of sicilian immigrants and yet they say the N word frequently. it's not just the south.
i have a 3 friends- one from eustice florida in lake county, one from mobile alabama, one from lake charles ,louisiana. all 3 don't know each other. one's 34, one's 59, one's 64. they all have told me in recent times that when they go back to the old hood to visit, white folks call them boy. they answer yessir mr so and so.they say the n word is used without abeyance there.
i'm sure it's not just those areas.

Selfish - you and I are on the same page when it comes to the word 'tolerance'. When someone uses that term, it makes 'the hair on the nape of my neck stand up'. What gives anyone the right to 'tolerate' another human being. That gives the notion that think you are 'above' them in some way. Sukkafu - you're right about the South, blatant racism is more of problem for that reason - it's blatant. In other areas of the country, the acts may be a little more subtle, but can do just as much damage. Educational issues, economics, housing, lending practices, jobs and hiring of contractors, the judicial system, the list goes on. You may not see the 'boys in the hoods' marching through the streets of Boston, but we all know racism is alive and well up there as well.
