I have always felt that the Temptation were the one who changed the choregraphy from clown-like to classy. I used to think the Coasters and groups of that ilk contiued the stero type of blacks in general with those kinds of uncontrolled movements onstage. When on the other hand all the other singers white or black like Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole I would see never acted like that on stage. I felt that for them to get a hit they had to act like clowns? I was not a big fan of Charlie Brown or Get a Job only because of how they looked performing those tunes. Then I saw the Temptations and that all changed. I knew THAT was how I wanted to look and dance. Understand during that period we were tying to get rid of those things like Amos and Andy and seeing black men look like Stepin Fetchit. The Temptations broke that mold for us and created something that showed black men could be sexy, charming and classy without being overt about it.

Speaking of My Girl, earlier today I went to the Universal Soul Circus. It's the only African-American owned circus in the world. It was real good and I really enjoyed it. But there was this one part where the ring leader (this dude off of BET's Def Jam) was like, enough with the new school and all this dancin, it's time to go back to the ole school and show them how it's done. I had an itchin' they were gonna play at least one song by the Temptations. And I was just waitin for him to say it. Soon as I heard Tempt I started cheering. And I started doing the dance to My Girl with him in my seat, but he only did the first few steps. He told the whole audience to join in. And of course, everyone knew My Girl. You should of heard when they got to the part after the 2nd verse where David goes, "hooo wooo". Man, if I thought that was fun, I need to go to a real concert.
They had a whole lot of good stuff in it, and they sent several positive messages out to the kids. If it ever comes to you, you should go see it. ;D

thanks angel niece! it sounds fun!
ABA- i thought the mills brothers were classy. i also thought that otis said in his book that the cadillacs were taught by cholly atkins so i assume they weren't too clowny either.
frankie lymon and the teenagers - were they clowny too? how about little anthony and the imperials? what about the drifters? or the platters? or the penguins?
i never saw them in person so i don't know.Tim, were those groups clowny like the coasters?

suk... I didn't see the Mill Brothers or the Cadallacs or Frankie Lymon perform but I did see Little Anthony and the Drifters neither group being KNOWN for their dancing. So to me.......the songs from the Coasters got a lot of air play when I was younger and I saw them and I knew I didn't want to be them. I didn't mean to infer that all black groups danced that way but I was influenced by the Temptations. The Cads didn't have the songs or the moves of the Temps even though they were good. The Temptations took all that to a level that no one else had been before. They were the best thing I had ever seen! As you well know they crossed over without any problems so that people like you and me watched them without thinking about the fact of whether they were a black or white group. They were just good. There is no other institution in music like the Temptations that I know of. I'm sure you will show me if there is. But I am looking at it strictly from a point of view from growing up in an era where black men were not looked upon as suave or sophisticated and the Temptations changed all that for sure. As a matter of fact as many black people did not like Nat King Cole as did back then. We all can say we like him now but as a kid Nat did nothing for me. Satchmo was ahead of my time and I didn't learn to like him until I was older. Sidney Potier was just getting roles that black men longed for for so long. The world was changing then. So the Temps were in the right place at the right time. They sang songs that made us feel good. They were right for what we were going through without pushing it in someone's face . I actually could see myself in them.

well put tim! i agree with you. the tempts were the sensation that has staying power. it is so cool to have 14 yr olds like their music as well as 80 yr olds. you don't see ja rule have that kind of influence, or r kelly.
they dance and sing which even the beatles never did!

the beatles are the best ever but they don't dance! that's what makes the tempts different- but the beatles played their own instruments and wrote almost all of their tunes. so there's a difference.

The Temptations broke that mold for us and created something that showed black men could be sexy, charming and classy without being overt about it. That's right! And that's why you will never see Otis Williams, unlike Eddie Levert, dry hump a speaker in concert!!!! ............ and I have to apologize 'cause none of y'all know what the HECK I'm talking about, but just let me vent! Speaking of My Girl, earlier today I went to the Universal Soul Circus. I thought it was the "Univer-SOUL!" circus. ;D Man, if I thought that was fun, I need to go to a real concert.
This is true! properly sung, this goes "...all the riches, Baby, one SKINNY man can claim . I don't want to hear it any other way...So you want Bo to start singing it like that?
