i was reading the article i linked to , and it says that samuel l. jackson was not happy that his daughter was dating a white man, so they transferred her to an all black female scholl in atlanta, and now she has a black boyfriend, so he's happy. Sorry to say, but that shows major IGNORANCE! Those things make me SICK. Ivory, if I happen to visit Chatanooga, TN...I'll stop by your church, it sounds like a great atmosphere.

Aba21 - Don't shoot the messenger ;D You're quiet right! Don't we deserve to be recognized all year long? But, Carter G. Woodson started out with 1 week and now its a month. We know how things progress in this area. Just think - my school wasn't even desegregated until 1971 - things move slowly. Some cities and counties still aren't recognizing MLK Day yet.

aside from the folks here in cali saying they don't wanna feel "patronized" by the celebration of black achievement, history, life, love, aspirations, and down to earth everyday struggles in this country... i've been lovin' e'ry minute!

poohshunny-you've rarer than a rainy day in san diego!
glad you posted!
we need to put more than a token effort into cultural exchange. like i've said before, talk is cheap.
here's what the sukkafu family does to promote racial harmony -
we belong to community cousins, an organization founded in 1992 after the l.a. riots -to promote social activities among people of all colors and backgrounds. chinese, mexican, ugandan, puerto rican, african american, caucasian, jews, muslims, indian, italian, brazilian, czech, all participate in pumpkin carving, beach parties, picnics, bbq's with bands, karaoke, etc.
we also belonged to the institute for healing from racism which was more of an awareness talk group.
we belong to the casa de puerto rico to promote latino culture in our family.
we have had exchange students stay in our home from japan, korea, and mainland china, and still correspond with several of them over the years.
we have attended services and held church offices and taught in spanish language congregations to help establish the Gospel in the spanish speaking community. we have made many friends in the latino community. we have attended many spanish speaking activities, and constance attends escuela espaniola twice a month for her bi lingual education.
there's so much more to do, but you have to start somewhere. we try to bring up our kids to respect others and celebrate their uniqueness in making up the human family.

Patronized? Huh? Sounds like California is getting more and more conservative all the time. I'd get out while you still can Poo! here's what the sukkafu family does to promote racial harmony -
I'm surprised the Sukkafu family NEEDS to do anything to celebrate racial harmony. Y'all just get UP in the morning and there's racial harmony all over the house.

I hear you tdallasw.....you were just informing us. Sometimes you just get so frustrated that people either don't see or refuse to see the obvious. It's so blantant it's funny. But a lot of progrees has been mad and you hope that progress will continue and we all learn something about each other everyday.

IRLM, did you catch "Let's Talk Church" yesterday? They had a different panel discussing the issue of women as puplit ministers again.
Unfortunately, it was a very one-sided (pro) discussion, but it was interesting.
