some folks say wilt was dominant because the average sized player back then was 5 inches shorter than today. it's said like this-aba at 6'8'' would be a center in high school or rec ball, then a power forward in college, and maybe a small forward or tall guard today.
i think wilt was terrific. but underhanded free throws!

Suk I don't care what the average size was. He was not playing against everybody just those guys I mentioned earlier who were some of the best centers of all time. ;D Now me....I was just good. No brag. Just fact. I couldn't score, played great defense. played every position and took no prisoners!!!!!! ;D

It's all about what is popular. They like those "lightening in a bottle" types. And not that I'm calling him lightening in a bottle, but Tiger Woods hasn't been pro that long and already they're saying he's becoming the best golfer in the world.

But here the thing that gets me... Disagree at your own risk!!! In other words, if you don't agree with what's popular, there's something wrong with you!

I see I got the great response I wanted.
I did see Dr. J. play in the ABA, NBA and college.
Yes, He would be in my next 5.
And someone else mentioned the other great player who would be in my next 5
Bob Petit He was the first power forward. And a great player who could do it all.
ABA21 I loved all the ABA guys. I agree with your assessment. They did rule the NBA for the next 10 years. I watched Artis in his last year with the Celtics, and when the man wanted to, he could dominate anyone.
My reason for both Wilt and Russell is this. If I am putting out a starting 5 out on the floor. I pick Wilt and Russell as my first 2. They take the two biggest guys on the other team. By the way the Celtics of the 80's played with 2 centers, 2 low post players, and McHale was a center mislabeled as a forward. So Wilt because of his pure power and strength and Russell for his leadership etc = still has the most rings of anyone.
Bird and Magic could play anywhere ( yes I know Bird always played the middle of a zone on defense ) And MJ for defense( often overlooked ) and offense. I picked him as my 5th player because of his defense.
2nd team
West and Robertson Dr. J. Petit and a center. The center is hard because you have many to pick from Shak, Thurmond, Lanier, Akeem, Alcindor Lewis as his coach calls him.
O K rip me apart.
Pick a better 2nd team.
And it is hard to pick the greatest point guard ever.
But you would pick Tiny if you ever saw him play. I'm talking about the Kings days when he could totally dominate a game from his spot with very very little help. To me he had the greatest combo of shot, drive, pass of them all and he always made the correct play. I'm talking about it from a coaches point of view.
I rank Stockton very high and I loved Isaiah

DR. J ! Showed Jordan how to fly ! But Doc had more HEART than Jordan ! Doc would slam in your face straight up in a halfcourt offense, against BETTER defenders ! Shaq couldn't hold Kareem's joc........goggles ! Sky hook more unstoppable than the Shaq dunk ! Kareem passed the ball, and LORD, don't foul him ! He hits his free throws ! Bird ? No Magic? Y'all been watching an N.B.A. movie that was produced in the same unrealistic way as the Temptations movie or what ? Maybe you should take the fifth ? ;D

This may shock and amayze ya,but Jordan wasn't better than Clyde Frazier ! Or West ! Those two played every aspect of the game ,not run to guard the weakest man on the floor ! Jordan would not try to guard Earl Monroe,Joe Caldwell,Pistol Pete, or The Big "O"! Kevin McHale a center ? Without Parrish ,the Celtics would not have won any championships with Bird !
