The Temptations new DVD by Reeling Through the Years will be released Sept. 12th in the United States. It will include footage not seen in years, if ever, including "Papa," The Way You Do the Things You Do, etc. Sounds terrific. Will include vocal tracks as well as scenes from the Snakepit. I believe Amazon has it listed as well as Reelin' Through the Years.

Both Tasha, though I'm not sure where Janebse got the info for the track list of performances. They don't appear to be listed anywhere.

Bits of information regarding the DVD came from so many different sources that I'd have to go back and research all over again to find where I learned what. Suffice it to say that the DVD will have more Tempts than just the Classic Five and Dennis. Somewhere I saw all the songs that will be on it. Certainly Richard Street and Damon Harris are on the DVD. I understand that some videos believed never before seen by the public will be on it. I realize that is a pretty vague statement. My feeling was that the person who said that was not sure whether a particular video had crept out into the secondary market in some way. He did not think so, but... If I come across the information again, I'll post it. I am looking forward to getting the DVD.

Me, too!
As much Marvin stuff as I have, all but two of the clips on his DVD were new to me. If that's the case with the Tempts, look out! Live concert (not studio or TV) footage of the C5 would be an unreal addition to the collection. The only misgivings I have -- being a C5 fan, exclusively -- is that a collection spanning the years 1965-1972 will likely be short on Ruffin material.
You have to figure that a DVD of 12-14 clips capturing performances from that range of years might include: "My Girl," "Get Ready," "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," "(I Know) I'm Losing You," "You're My Everything," "I Wish It Would Rain," "Cloud Nine," "I Can't Get Next To You," "Ball Of Confusion," "Psychadelic Shack," "Just My Imagination," "Papa (Was A Rollin' Stone)" and a couple other odds and ends.
Who knows! Maybe we'll get lucky and finally get to see a C5 performance of "Since I Lost My Baby" (the second-greatest song ever recorded)! There most certainly should be at least one Paul Williams lead, as well. Time will tell. The ReelinInTheYears.com web site offers a Fall 2006 release date, so I guess I'll just have to wait like everyone else...with credit card in hand.

I was hoping no one would ask me. I have promised relatives to dig through my genealogical files/pictures and send them pictures and information about direct ancestors of theirs. Plus I am writing a book on genealogy and doing some other publications. I was hoping a curious soul would go stumbling through information and come across it, the way I did. Since the last date mentioned on the description is 1972, we know it will include Street and Harris. However, when they used terms like "bonus," the "Snakepit," and vocal tracks, one is inclined to hope that the DVD will go beyond 1972. But one must also realize the production cost factor enters in. In making Gaye's DVD, the producers were only dealing with Gaye's heirs, composers, shows where action was filmed, etc. And the producer thanked these people for their contributions in a way which suggested they did not ask an arm and a leg from the producers. ANd Gaye's career ended in the early '80's. In dealing with The Temptations, one is dealing with 21 Tempts and a 45+ years career. I think the costs of doing the latter would be "cost prohibitive." I understand that in dealing with the tapes of Gaye's performance, the producers were sometimes able to find an individual involved in televising the performance who had saved a tape just for himself. The network did not have an undamaged copy or had simply never saved any. When I asked ABC about getting a tape of a certain program, they responded they did not have any copies of that program. They might have been lying, but I doubt it because many networks are finding that releasing these ancient TV programs is profitable.

Tasha, You never want to put parameters around your understanding of anything. You never want to say I will understand/like just this much and no more. What if you decided you did not want to take any "new" medicines because they were dangerous. So you made your boundary line anything after 1930. You would not be able to receive penicillin or any antibiotic. Very likely many of us would not be alive today.
If we just took the 1960's and listened to Temptation music or any Motown music from 1961 to 1969, we would see an immense growth and enrichment. Without any technical musical knowledge at all, we can hear the fantastic improvement. Instruments changed, more were added; the difference is amazing. It reminds me of jazz and the change from ragtime to the present. Jazz, perhaps because of its improvisation, continually changes at a rapid speed. Unfortunately, there are many people who want to stop with Dixieland or swing. I was talking to a symphony orchestra conductor about jazz, and feeling musically ignorant but wanting to learn more, I said, "The early jazz seems so simplistic." I did not know why; I only knew that the contemporary jazz seemed much more mentally challenging. He looked at me the way one looks at a child who has just made an intellectual discovery and smiled and said, "It is."
We hear the stories of the Tempts in the first years being called "the no-hit Tempts." And some people wondered why Gordy kept them on. But he knew their talent. And he, and all the other musicians, knew they were merely learning their craft and improving their skills. One Motown expert said that David did not make them better; he merely was added at the time they had blossomed and learned their craft. (You know, it's lilke getting a jar open. You work and work and it still stays closed; someone comes along and opens it. But you have done all the work preparing it to open.)
Talent is never enough in any field. Is it not logical to realize that the Tempts kept on learning and becoming better and better as The Temptations? Remember there are five and they work as a unit. There would never be a specific date when they would say that they knew everything and were perfect as is. We all keep on improving and learning unless we become so egotistical we think we know it all and stop learning. And that happens too.

I think Tasha's just saying that she prefers the music recorded by the lineups of the C5 and the original four with Dennis. I can't disagree with her...though, there were some pretty good Ali Woodson songs.
The working title of the DVD specifies that only performances from 1965-1972 will be included, so she should be thrilled!
Oh, and...
"One Motown expert said that David did not make them better..."
That individual should be kicked in the groin.
