There's no question about that. I am only saying all the stuff that went down didn't come form Otis. But David gave people enough rope to hang him by his actions too. If you know they are out to get you, then you find a wayt ot keep it from happening. Sometimes arrogance is not the best way to deal with a problem. He probably had no idea Berry would do that to him cause after all he was David Ruffin. How,by kissing ass? That's never the best way to deal with a problem. I don't blame David for being vocal. In fact I'm PROUD of him in doing so. Gave me a new-found respect for the man. Like Muhammad Ali....standing up to the draft. In Ruffin's case, the drugs were an excuse for them to trash him. Who in the group didn't do drugs?

I just think that if one way didn't work you have to try another. He was well aware of what could happen if he crossed Berry...........

How did he cross Berry? By standing up for himself? Good ! He's the man! How do you know that David didn't try another way? I don't know he didn't try it another way. But can you say at that time he was willing to give up his status to prove he was right. I just don't believe he was that aware of the consequences that would come of his actions. It dont matter if he was right or wrong, taking a stand, kissing ass or whatever. I think if he knew then what he found out after, he wouldn't have done it. It's great to take a stand if you have something to fall back on if it fails . And this was a failure because he was denied the ability to make a living. I would feel more compassion for David if his stand had made things better for others but all it did was make him an example for anybody else who thought they could win against Berry. According to the liner notes of David's new cd, was he was told how to get back in the good graces by many who worked at Motown but David refused the advise of others and continued his self-destructive ways. This came from people who worked with David at Motown.

In that 1971 Soul and Blues interview David showed he was a classy guy but he showed he had to speak up for himself.
After, "My Whole World Ended" (a million seller!), the company chose the follow-up as "I'm So Glad I Fell For You". I was upset and I said that they were sending me back to church! Things are a little better now, though, and I'm just working on a new album with Smokey Robinson that I am really happy with. My new single, "You Can Come Right Back To Me", comes from that session and I like it. I've still got a few months left on my contract and I'll sit still till then, at least.
A few months ago, David recorded an album with his older brother, Jimmy, and, although not promoted to it’s fullest in either Britain or the States, the album sold well enough. But it was the idea of the Ruffins rather than the Company. Incidentally, David was horrified to learn that "Stand By Me" remained unissued in Britain!
So, David had to stand up for himself because there was no on else to do it for him.

If you work for my company, and you know I'm a control freak. You either play along, or you get fired. One Chief, and the rest are Indians. Somebody has to know what that's like, I know I do. Imagine the worst Supervisor you've ever had, who you knew was a threat to your bread & butter. But you had to make that stand, no imagine the person being the one who signs your paycheck. Think you'd be in any better position?? You just have to know where your going to draw the lines. And hope you have a back up.

I'll take my chances and pick my battles and go for it. If you don't stand for something your fall for anything.

I have told my boss where to go and what to do when they got there! I didn't get fired, all I got was more respect in the work place! All I say is "right on David"!

His stand would have made it better for others. It was about the group, not just David. Nothing self destrictive about not kissing ass
