March 30, 2004, 3:10 PM ET Motown Spruces Up Supremes/Temptations Duets Motown has set an April 27 release for "Joined Together: The Complete Studio Duets," compiling two discs worth of collaborations between Diana Ross & the Supremes and the Temptations. Some of the tracks were originally released on the late '60s albums "Diana Ross & the Supremes Join the Temptations" and "Together" and are augmented here with a variety of bonus cuts. "Join the Temptations" featured the smash hit single "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," plus covers of such Motown staples as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and Marvin Gaye's "Try It Baby." The new edition begins with a medley of five songs, including the Supremes' "Stop! In the Name of Love" and also sports previously unreleased covers of the Beatles' "Got To Get You Into My Life" and the Burt Bacharach/Hal David-penned "A House Is Not a Home." "Together" is loaded with unreleased single and mono mixes of tracks like the Band's "The Weight," Smokey Robinson's "I'll Try Something New" and Gaye's "Stubborn Kind of Fellow." Rounding out the album is a Mary Wilson solo version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and an extended version of "Not Now, I'll Tell You Later," which first appeared on the Temptations' 1966 album "Get Ready." The packaging for "Joined Together" sports new interviews with Supremes members Ross, Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, plus the Temptations' Otis Williams. ((Jonel)). Thanks for the article. I'm really looking forward to the cut "You Gave Me Something". Does anyone remember it (Aba)? The lyrics are: "From out of the darkness into the light, you gave me hope baby you gave me sight, you gave me something that I could be proud of, you gave me strength baby you gave me love......". Wouildn't be surprised if it were the Funk Brothers moonlighting on the orginal Fantastic Four version. Can't wait to hear what the Tempts & Supremes did with it. I'll have to, 2 :Dmore weeks.

One thing I'm not excited about are mono mixes. They were released in stereo, why use mono? But it doesn't matter, since I already have those songs in stereo. I am glad they won't have that distortion in "Why..." I thought something was wrong.

You know I got to ask this ... Is david on any of those?
Now I don't expect him to be singin with ms.ross ... As I understand it they didn't like each other to much ... lol ... But I would love to hear his voice on their ... I'ma buy it anyways ... But it'd be nice to have DR on there ;D

Oops, I forgot. "Now Now, I'll Tell You Later" was recorded in 1963 before David Ruffin joined the group.

Elbridge did sometimes sing lead during concerts. He is said to have sounded like Ted Taylor and to be a dynamic singer; translate that as the girls liked him.
There are many people still alive who heard him sing when he was a Temptation and describe his singing as above. Al was in the Premiers for a while. Ted Taylor can be heard on The Soul Club.

The people who you say have heard Al sing have been mighty quiet. This is the first time anyone has commented on Al's talent. I would like to be able to find more. Who these people are,are they noted reviewers,or personal friends of yours? If they are noted reviewers,I would like to see more of their reviews. And get to know who they are. |
