VH1 has been running a documentary per se about New Edition. I thought it was pretty good except that not enoug time was spent on Johnny Gill and they never really let you see just how good their dance routines were.
I was shocked to see that after their first tour on the road for six months, they came home and got a check for $1.87 for the whole six months. I'm not surprised given their ages and the way this business is run but that was just horrible.
I was also appalled that they would put Bobby Brown on there in the condition he appeared to be in at the time.
Anyone else see this show?

I saw it. I thought it should have been longer and concentrated a little less on the drama and more on what the group was about. I think you are right, though, Bobby Brown was in NO condition to appear on TV. That was sad.

I watched it Sun. night too. I had seen the tail end of it some time earlier so was on the lookout and caught it. I agree with everybody. 1) it could/should have been longer, and gone more into their developement. 2) Bobby was a straight up mess, he needed to go get sober. 3) I'd have liked to see more about the money. They got robbed somewhere, but we never really found out the results of any lawsuit, that guy said "I never took their money". Was that a case of contracturally it was HIS money cuz he was robbing little kids blind legally? or what? And I didn't really understand the deal with MCA and the subsidiary lable. Gonna have to watch it again (glad I taped it!) and see if I can make sense of it. But I think they could have explained in more depth if they had more time. People need to see things like that, esp. aspiring artists. Why is it sounding like deja vu all over again?

I saw it on Thursday, I think it might be coming on 12 am( in a few minutes)est. I agree about the length but I don't really remember a Behind the Music being 2 hours, those are mainly the E THS joints. There are some humorous and some suprizing moments from the show, I'll wait til others see it first. I have been waiting for this for a few years now. The concert footage clips was pretty good.

A lot of their story wasn't even broched as far as I was concerned.....The Otis oif their group, and I say this because he sings very little lead if any, Michael Bivens wasn't given enough credit for his business savy....he was the brainchild behind BBD and he discovered Boyz II Men and that wasn't even mentioned. There were a few other groups he had a hand in, including that little group , whose name escapes me now, that was in Meteor Man with the golden hair.He is certainly the leader of the group and it is clear on their new cd who got them together with P Diddy.
There was also some footage of them with the Temps I would have like to have seen on there as well. They said they tried to be like the Temps......and in some crazy ways.....they were!

Yes, I was waiting to hear about the connection with Boyz II Men also ... so much info, so little time. I would have liked to see more of the role each one played within the group, a description of what each brought to the table vocally and behind the scenes. PLUS... I'd like to know what size check that guy got when they got their $1.87 checks.

No, Behind the Music is always an hour that I've seen. That doesn't stop me from WISHING for more! ;D ;D Or a Part Deux. I made my own tape with the VH1 show plus the five music videos from their 20th Century Master's DVD.

I saw similarities with our Temps and NE. I never knew Ralph was disliked among his group members. I guess when he retreated to be alone, the other guys figured he Ralph thought he was "all that". I can see Mike Bivens as the Otis; a business man for NE. I was also surprised Boyz II Men was never mentioned. For me, bringing in Johnny Gill was like Theo coming in with Ali Woodson on board. Now there was a scene out of the FIVE HEARTBEATS when Bobby Brown looked in the camera and said NKOTB could never be NE... "y'all never be New Edition", just like Eddie King, Jr. telling Flash "trying to riff like me, trying to be like me; well you're never gonna be me cause you ain't got it and you ain't me!"

I thought EXACTLY the same thing when Bobby said that. The sad part is, he really did resemble ol' Eddie King when he was saying it, too (and all that entails).

I finally saw it today and I agree with the consensus. It wasn't long enough and, as a result, very little detail is contained. I learned very little from watching it. I'm not shocked by the fact that Puff the Magic Diddy wanted to aim NE at a younger audience. Bad Boy does nothing to appeal to adults. They never have and it's doubtful they ever will. 'Course, NE's record stiffed big time because of it.
As has already been stated, we learn nothing of Michael Bivin's business pursuits, nothing about exactly how Johnny Gill came to be in the group, and nothing about Ricky Bell's solo record. Really, they should have taken some of the time they spent talking about Bobby Brown's already well-publicized troubles and used it to elaborate on some of these other more interesting topics. Ronnie Devoe's absence during the interviews was also rather conspicuous.
