Has anyone ever read "The Good Soldier" by Ford Maddox Ford? I love that book, too. Sure, it's a little old fashioned (written in 1915), but the basic truths in the story still are valid today. Oftentimes, the person who seems to be the least moral one shows more character in a truly difficult situation than all the "clean" ones together.
