D-a-n-g... I'm not feeling Damon on this one. Someone mentioned a while back that he's just a studio singer. Perhaps... he does an ourstanding job on 'Love Woke Me Up This Morning' but the live version of 'Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)' doesn't move me. I'd rate Glenn as the best live version followed by Ron. I have not yet heard Eddie sing it live. I'll bet Glenn does a bang up job. I know he's got to be great. Damon doesn't do it for me. On "Love Woke Me Up This Morning" Damon seemed to not do that well in concert either. But maybe Budrocket was right. Maybe it was nerves.

I never saw that configuration of the Tempts, & I've only heard a few live snippets from that time. Glenn was in the group first time I saw them live - & yes he tore that sh*t up.
But I do remember at the time that the story about this kid Damon who got to join his favorite group was something I could identify with, being a kid myself at the time (though *ahem* considerably younger, thank you). So maybe I am biased or willing to give Damon more of a break than somebody more objective, like you Hype. I'm also sorry to hear from Glenn Jr that Damon let it all go to his head & turned into a brat, which makes me feel even more for him. That must have been a rude awakening when he got his walking papers. Some people never recover from something like that & go the Frankie Lymon route...
I do like Damon's recorded work with the Tempts, & I never felt at the time - or now - like there was something missing. Though I will admit that thanks to you I am listening to him with new ears.

Hey Budrocket... Cheech mentioned you said perhaps Damon was nervous. I agree. This live version of JMI (RAWM) sounds very a-i-r-y to me; whispy in a way and my ears are not used to hearing the song that way. I'm not taking anything away from Damon. I know what it's like to be in the midst of legends at such a young age

Yes, more than a little unnerving, isn't it? It takes a while to find our own footing & see where your talents fit in the mix without taking anything away from the original concept. And, depending on how young you are, you might not always have the maturity to handle it gracefully...

When I came into the Channels, I made up in my mind that I would adhere to the original sound of the 1956 classic lineup. Those hard-core doowop heads want to hear the song just like it was recorded in 1950-something, not just the Channels but all the groups they come out to hear. No when we do 1960's sould cover tunes, I gotta throw in some of Curet30 in the mix ;D

Damon and Glenn have different styles..and I think Glenn was more original than Damon....Damon sounded too much like Eddie...Glenn sounded like Glenn. Damon was a good performer..I think that Live in Japan was made either 1973,or 1974 and Damon had been in the group for awhile . So I don't think that he would be THAT nervous to make him sound like that. Might have been his first time to Japan. Everytime I saw him with that line-up he was great. He just didn't look like a Temptation.

I agree with the consensus here. Damon's dialing this one in. He's totally not into it. Nerves might be doing it but even the few ad-libs he does just don't make sense. The song calls for a sense of longing and sadness that Damon just isn't putting across.
