Hey Girl,Heavenly,Isnt The Night Fantastic and especially Firefly are custom made for Richards voice. Ali was great, but doing Richard's leads better than Richard,no.
The most versatile and the wider range, I dont know about that one .I'd have to go with Mr. Ruffin on that one. He could go from a refined voice on My Girl to the gritty lead of I Wish It Would Rain. The difference is like night and day. Then also go to My Baby, not gritty like I Wish It Would Rain or Aint Too Proud To Beg,but not as refined as My Girl. Only Ruffin

To 'Doc T'. First, remember that David Ruffin wasn't an original. He is a part of the Classic 5 and the HOF 6. But he was technically the first major replacement. Another thing is about Ali being able to recreate all the leads of the other former lead singers. Yes, he would have been able to take on that task and succeed. Richard would probably even agree that Ali was so great that he could do better interpretations of His own leads. Ali had the most versatile voice and wider vocal range than those you named, with all loyalty to favorite singers aside. P.S. It's not a heated debate. This is not a heated debate....IT IS REFRESHING TO HAVE A GOOD THREAD TALKING ABOUT THE TEMPTATIONS. The Forum has gotten to be a bit boring, really because the Group today is kinda boring. David not an original (I'd say yes and NO) When you think of the original Temptations you don't think about Al Bryant? ?? Ali's voice was versatile.....but there are certain songs that he could not touch 1. A song for You, Memories.....Dennis put his stamp on those 2. Their first (2) Grammys was with the voice of Dennis FROM 1968 TO 1976 DENNIS WAS THE VOICE OF THE TEMPTATIONS. ALI BROUGHT THEM BACK WITH TREAT HER LIKE A LADY....and you really did not miss Dennis ;D

Of course, when people think of the originals, they think of the C5. You said that there are certain songs that Ali can't touch. I'll change that and say there are certain songs that one is "not supposed to" touch. But he could definately mess with it. When Dennis did 'A Song For You', it certainly wasn't as good as Donny Hathaway's version. Definately not better. He's waaay farther than "putting his stamp on it". I challenge you to hear Ali's version of 'I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know'. His version of that, as compared to the Dennis version of another of the classic Donny songs, is much more comparable to the standard quality that Donny set. It's on this thread. I couldn't believe it. I love Donny Hathaway so much. But Ali's was second only to Donny's. I've heard better versions of 'A Song For You' than Dennis'. I'll go as recent as Christina Aguillera.

GOk I've said it before and I will say it again. Ali Woodson was the hands best lead singer the Tempts have EVER had. Now I love Ruff, Dennis, Louis and GC, the others dont count:) but Ali reigned supreme. As someone stated he could any song from any era but none of the others could touch his stuff. He had it all yall [youtube][

When Dennis joined the Temptations he refused to sing My Girl because he said it was David's song. Thats why Paul sang it for a brief time then Richard. And Richard continued to sing it until just before he left when Ali took over and in my opinion sang it as well as anyone ever has. You can hear Paul cover it on Talk Of the Town and Dennis on Temps and Supremes Together. Theo did a nice version of the song but he wasnt there long enough to really do it the justice I think he could have. And dont forget GC! He sang it pretty well too!

Louis Price and Theo had probably the "purist"voices of any post Ruffin singer in the group, now I know the Ali and Dennis fans are probably saying Sixfingers is nuts, but Listen to David how he would pronounce his words, crisp and clear..same with Theo and Louis,creastal- clear ,no playback to understand what was sanged..

Theo had kind of nasal sound on some of his longer phrasing and Louis...? Pure voice? He didn't have a Temptation style voice for sure. He had more of a lower range Jerry Butler back of the throat sound.

The Theo, Ali, Richard, Melvin, Otis group was a serious group. Theo pushed Ali to sing and you can hear it on For Lovers Only. They just didnt stay together long enough! I would have liked to have seen that combination stay together for a while!

I will say this. I saw a youtube video of Louis Price singing 'A Song For You' while with the Temptations and I liked his version better than Dennis' version. I really liked his voice on that performance.

The versatility in Ali's voice was second to none. From a falsetto to a first baritone made hime one of the premier lead vocalist for the Tempts. Many times I asked myself what it may have been like if Ollie had been one of the Classic Five. I can honestly say that I have seen every cumulative version of the Tempts but if I was ever asked to to position the lead vocals it would be 1. Ali, 2.David,3. Louis 4. Dennis, 5.Theo, 6. Bruce, 7. Bo, 8. G.C., in that order. Also I want to take a little time out to wish each and everyone of you the best this holiday season. Although we are all experiencing some difficult times during this recession the most important element to this is that we have each other. Much love and success in 2012.

I guess it's safe to say, Bass Singer, that we are both Ali Woodson fans to the fullest.

He had more of a lower range Jerry Butler back of the throat sound. Yeah, back then, but now Louis's voice has "aged" and now has a bit of the classic Temptation "raw rasp" to it. As far as I'm concerned he has the ammunition to take Bruce out of the game. Remember, Louis covered both David's and Dennis's leads in the movie. I didn't hear anything like a Jerry Butler sound there, did you? Agree or disagree? Even now Louis doesn't sound like he did in the 70's. Remember, he and Jerry Butler both came up in Chicago and I now Jerry must have influenced Louis's sound when he first arrived in the Tempt's organization.

Ask the average person whose voice was the "signature" of the Tempts , you will get David, Eddie, Dennis. In that order..... The average person would ask.... Ali, who? I love Ali just as much as you, but the truth is the truth....
