Dbaby,
Not sure which critics you referred to who only gave Pirates of the Carribbean two and a half stars. The ones I read have RAVED about the movie and Johnny Depp's performance and how he just makes the movie.
One critic said Orlando Bloom was good, but then Depp comes in and walks off with the movie, turns it into something very special. I've always admired Depp's work and his willingness to take on such unusual roles. Not sure whether the roles are unusual or whether he makes them so. One person said the role of Captain Jack was well written, but Depp took it way beyond and gave it an unusual depth.
I'm off to see it now. Not because the critics I read said it was tremendous, but because everyone says it is so, and I want to see for myself.

The people who talk about movies here NEVER have anything good to say about any movies I like, so that makes me feel better! Yeah, Something about Captin Jack Sparrow makes you fall in love with him. When I saw it yesterday, it was awesome because I was sitting behind these girls who obviously went to see if for Orlando Bloom, but then through the movie, they fell in love with Captin Jack instead! But come back and tell me what you think!

Dbaby,
Pirates of the Carribbean was absolutely delightful, and Johnny Depp was unbelievable.
Orlando Bloom was fine, looked rather like Errol Flynn.
But it was Depp's movie. The couple I went with started laughing from the first scene. I had seen the trailers and had no idea how funny the movie was until I got there. I've written all my relatives and said, "You must go to see 'Pirates of the Carribbean'."
I recognized the scenes they "stole" from the Pirates of the Carribbean ride at Disney World. And was astonished at how well they could capture the ride while telling an original story.
Now I'm left wondering how Depp got his ideas for developing his character. Someone saw him on Letterman last night. Wished I had known.

I saw a bit of him on Leno about a week ago. I never knew he was a funny guy. (That's why in Word Association "humorous" came to mind when someone wrote Johnny Depp.) Someone had me thinking about his movie "Crybaby" today. I feel like seeing it again. Jay Leno said pirates and pimps have something in common. They both say "Hi-ho."

Dbaby,
I read one of the two star reviews. I agree with the critic that some of the "battles" are too long, but is there a movie around today in which the moviemaker doesn't become too enthralled with his special effects and overdo them?
And she did admire the choreography of the first duel of Orlando and Johnny which I thought was so beautifully danced. And then in the lobby of the theater when I walked out, they had young fencers putting on a dueling display. But they weren't Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp by a long ways.
When sthe critic was critical of the perfection of the Disney detailed work, I thought, "When is perfection wrong and sloppy work right?" Somehow she missed the mistakes (which might have made her happy) which every single movie has. But then I am confident the posters here will find every single mistake.
Overall her review smacked of the writer who wants to be noticed by writing a slightly negative review.
But she did pick up on that delightful remark where Norrington tells Jack he is the worst pirate he's ever heard of. And Jack replies, "But you've heard of me."

Now I'm left wondering how Depp got his ideas for developing his character. Someone saw him on Letterman last night. Wished I had known. Oh yeah! I saw him on Letterman and Jay Leno! He rocked. You can find the transcript for the Letterman show here: www.johnnydeppfan.com/lettermantranscript03.htm and the even better one, the transcript for the Leno show here: www.johnnydeppfan.com/lenotranscript03.htmBut it was Depp's movie.I think so too! well, cheski and i are going to see it next wednesday. i was going to see the league of extraordianry gentlemen but cheski and elise said it's too much so pirates it is.Awesome! You'll have to tell me what you think! I'm going to see it AGAIN today with my mom. Yeah yeah, I'm a loser. I TOLD you guys I was obessive compulsive didn't I? ........ and weren't THOSE girls sitting IN FRONT of another girl who went to see it for Orlando Bloom?LOL, um... no! When I first heard the teaser for it back in December, I had never heard of Johnny Depp before, but then my best friend was RAVING about him, and I watched Sleepy Hallow, Chocolat, and Edward Scissorhands with her because I had never seen them. So in the end, I actually was a tiny bit more excited to see Johnny Depp then I was to see Orlando Bloom. Probably just because I have a thing for Pirates!
