My senior prom was great! I went with my then boyfriend, Phil - known to you all now as board member 'poohshunny'. We are still very good friends (I also attended Phil's prom with him the following year in '75 - I'm a year older than he is) Anyway.... back in those days - we had LIVE bands - WHAT A CONCEPT!! Most of the local high schools had some fantastic musicians that put together really good bands. They rocked the joint. My prom was at the Sheraton in Wheaton, MD and it was a blast. A group of us went to dinner at the Japanese Steak House in Bethesda, MD before the prom and one young lady had WAY too much hot sake. She got TOASTED! One of the wildest scenes at our prom was when a guy named Tyrone, who we all knew was a pimp, showed up with several of his 'girls' wearing their Players' Ball best. They arrived in a chaffeur- driven cream colored Rolls Royce. Wonder if he knew Ruffin? ;D

After reading Tdallasw's report of her prom, I thought, "Well, mine was ordinary and not at all as unusual as hers."
But she mentioned live bands composed of high school kids, and, yes, we had those too. And the kids were good, but what was especially interesting was the fact that years later when we went back to a reunion, the same band played. In the intervening years some kids had gone to college, some had not. The leader of the band (then and now) was the same guy. He had become a bank president. Another original member of the band worked in a gas station, but no matter what they did in their adult lives, they had remained together as a band. They weren't the Funk Brothers, but they all loved jazz. It brought tears to the eyes.

Ok, let me give you two words of advice.......... DON'T stress it!!! (well, that's three)
(I'm trying to find a prom photo to show you but I'm not having any luck finding one.)
Anyway, I got dressed at my best g'friends house. I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but I somehow I ended up being in charge of the dining for my boyfriend and I and about 15 other couples. We had a room booked at a restaurant that was offering a special.
Well, in all of the commotion of getting our hair done, I had forgotten to pick up my boyfriends bouttenier. So when he pulls up to pick me up, I realize it and we had to go on the opposite side of town from where we were eating to get it. I'm wearing this little sheath, tight dress that I can barely walk in much less run in and I'm hurrying trying to get his thing so we can get to the restaurant.
We get there and EVERYONE is waiting. For some reason they wouldn't seat anyone util I go there. So we rush in and get seated.
Now on a happy note, my boyfriend got me this beautiful simple orchid for a corsage. I hadn't asked for one but that's what he got me. My girlfriends all looked like they'd won the Kentucky Derby with these GIANT carnation arrangements strapped to them.
Well, my boyfriend could be a bit of a jerk at times and I hadn't grown up enough to stand up to him. I LOVE mushrooms. I had some sauteed ones on my plate. He hated them and told me "if you eat any of those, I won't kiss you!" So I spent the whole night waiting for him to look away so I could sneak some in.
We get ready to leave and the managers wouldn't let ANY of us leave until they decided that we ALL had paid, so they pretty much locked us up in the little room until that was all taken care of. Good thing there wasn't a fire! Since I was "in charge" I somehow got put in charge of helping the restaurant make sure we had all paid. No fun at all.
So off we go to the dance. It went pretty well and uneventful. Except I blinked when we took our portrait which sucked. We ended up getting the pictures free though.
NOw the BAD part came at the end. I had to be home by midnight. My boyfriend was friends with some guys who were friends with girls that I didn't get along with (does that make any sense?) and he wanted to go to a party these girls were having. So he and I got into this big fight because he wanted to go and I didn't want him to go.
And that's all I remember. But yeah, I think if I had chilled out a bit and actually took the time to ENJOY everything it would have gone much better.

We had a DJ.
Now speaking of reunions, I had my 10th one two years ago and I thought it was awful. I had fun and all, but there I don't even remember there being any music. We also had to share the place with the group five years behind us. To make it even worse, my two best friends weren't there. ............ However, a bunch of us went to Six Flags the next day and until it came a big storm, we had a lot of fun.

Sounds pretty cool guys! Yeah, our prom isn't a "Senior" prom, it's Juniors and Seniors prom thingie. That would be kinda weird because I'm a sophomore, but all my friends are Juniors and Seniors anyway. But yeah, I'll TRY not to stress it! LOL. I would have to say the best part of formal dances is getting your hair in an updo.

Mine was in this Gibson girl Dynasty thing, but it was just barely not the 80's any more, so that was my excuse!

I was told that it was fun, though.

My school had a Junior/Senior Dance which was pretty much the same thing as a prom and I didn't go my junior year but I pretty much was made to go senior year because I was not going. Parent's Council called my aunt to ask if I'd be in attendance for the dinner before the dance and she told them I'd be there. So that forced me to find someone and get things ready for that day. I asked my friend Laura to be my date and I went with her. My aunt rented my tux and bought he corsage and boutonniere. My mother let me borrow her car. I picked up Laura and went to Tredgar where the dinner was. Had the best tortellini I've ever had there. We, the guys from my school and some of the girls from our sister school, had sent in some old pics to be shown on a wall there and that was quite cute. Parent's Council was there taking pictures and remarking on how everyone was dressed, etc. Then we left there and drove around for a while before the dance was actually to begin. Laura liked hills and I decided to show her some of Richmond's steepest! We drove to the school where the dance was and we were one of the first people there for a little while. It was nice... balloons flowers stuff like that in the old Field House which also had big chunks of insulation falling from the ceiling and a few trash cans were placed in spots where the roof leaked. But it was all good! The people started arriving and they had this unheard of band playing for us, playing covers of other people's songs. Some of the kids smelled like alcohol and acted funny. I remembered I cussed at one of them and Laura acted all upset about it... she wasn't. Yeah we danced... I'm not a dancer and I ended up losing my self-consciousness about dancing... wildly too.. Who the heck knows what we invented! Laura told me look don't worry, none of them are dancing in rhythm... just do anything. After that dance was another dance at the church near the school, so we, with a few others in my mother's car, drove the like 3 blocks to the church and danced and ate some more. They had a DJ there and I made a fool out of myself doing the Macarena That was a fun night. Laura and I left the church and they were still going on. I took her home and was back at my aunt's (who waited up) about 2AM or 2:30. She took who knows how many pictures of me in my tux. She'd taken one before I left but she wanted more. The next year, I was at the end of my freshman year at MWC and Laura calls me at school. I guess she got my number from someone at home. She asked me to be her date for her Junior/Senior (she went to another private school and they called theirs a Jr/Sr too). I accepted and I found out it was the day after I had my final exam and came home. She called a few days before her Jr/Sr. so I had no time to prepare. I got home and the next day my mother and I decided to go to the florist and make a bouquet. Well, the florist was packed and it took hours to get in and out of there (the next day was Mother's Day). So, being tied up at the Florist made me late. We had planned to meet some of Laura's friends for dinner, but after leaving the florist and dropping my mother off at her place, and picking up Laura (where one of her visiting relatives joked about me being late at first making me feel really bad), we got to the restaurant as her friends were leaving. they told us we could still eat if we wanted to, and I told Laura it was up to her and she bounced that back to me and ultimately we didn't eat. We followed them to the ice cream shop across the parking lot and I didn't have anything, I can't remember if Laura had, but we hung out there until it was time to go to the dance. Their dance had a Caribbean theme to it with non-alcoholic tropical drinks. There was also a gazebo on a lake that was pretty nice. The geese scared some of the people though, I thought they were neat. One thing that came out of that dance was, before it, I HATED K-Ci & JoJo's "All My Life." We did the same nutty dancing as before. After that we went to one of Laura's friend's house where we changed into regular clothes and sat around listening to music and started a movie, I forget which, until we left to walk to another one of their friend's houses where the mother was reportedly psycho. She took people's keys so they would not go anywhere and she had constant supervision... which I thought was good, but she wasn't getting mine! I put my keys in my sock! It was pretty fun there but got boring after a while. I took many pictures though. Eventually Laura wanted to leave, but the mother was not letting any of the people there leave (the psycho part), so Laura told the lady her parents wanted her back home before it got to late. So the mother had me call (and wake up) Laura's parents to tell them we were coming back (and they told me we could stay out as long as we wanted). After that call, the mother snuck us out. I waved bye to the people but she quickly told me not to do that. Laura and I walked back to my mother's car and we couldn't think of any other place to go so I took her home and I went home. Fun nights. The End. Oh... and... That was at my Jr/Sr in '97... I didn't know the boutonniere was on the wrong side until I got home and my aunt told me. When I left her place to pick Laura up, I'd forgotten the boutonniere and corsage and she met us at Tredegar and gave them to us but we put them on after she left. I had no idea and still am embarrassed. This was at her Jr/Sr in '98. She let me have the good polaroid... the first pic we took we made faces.

last friday night stevie and cheski went to a weird dance at school called MORP. it is the antithesis of the prom. everybody dresses like slobs(like they do at school) and they dance and have refreshments. the kids said it was a blast.
steve will go to his senior prom this year.
i went to the prom in junior year and senior year. we had a live band both times- my friend rick dimauro's band. they were pretty good. junior year i went with kathy walker who actually had a boyfriend but asked me to go and she drove. in senior year i went with 3 girls patty mcmichael who was my girlfriend, wendy, and debbie and my friend tom kimball who is a tv and film director now living in denver , and tom' s girlfriend danita smith. we had a blast and had dinner before at a nice restaurant and had a great time at the dance. i had long hair, sideburns, and john lennon glasses.

I'd PAY to see that! ;D
There's nothing wrong with an anti-prom dance.. sounds neat to me... or like a regular dance...

I never did get a chance to go to prom...but since I love dressing up, I probably would have enjoyed it. Sukka, I don't think I would enjoy the MORP because I abhor sloppy dressing...although an informal dance may be fun for some students.

Sounds awesome! Yeah, we have MORP here too. It's Prom backwards. But I heard that it was REALLY DUMB and stuff so I'm never gonna go. But we have an informal dance called Pigskin, and it's a girl ask guy and you dress alike. It's awesome!

diva, on my wedding night with elise, we went to this motel in south central l.a. with heart shaped tubs and mirrored everything. the sad thing to me was that there was a line out the building from the lobby-the people were all dressed in tuxes and prom dresses- i wanted to take the motel mgr and smack him one. i guess many a young lady had a pretty dress on but probably wished today that they may not have been there that night in 1984!

Deanna, Elaine, Me and Deidra Do I look like I'm trying to be Crystal Carrington or what! LOL! ......... And if you look closely at my earrings they are made from the same buttons that are on my dress. I made them myself. See, I was crafty even then! And here are Elaine and I at our reunion, 10 years and a couple of Krispy Kremes later.
