Several answers to several postings.
1. I am so glad that Ivory told me about the sherbet suits being so famous because when I told people about seeing a man in a pink suit, they looked rather horrified and down their nose at me. But then I added that these were the "sherbet suits and very famous, world famous, in fact," they adjusted their faces and absorbed the new information as they realized that they had never seen such a world famous event. And I had.
2. I know people have always liked Dennis's rather "rough" voice, but, try as I might, I can't. What I like best about "Papa was a rolling stone" in addition to the rhythm and the content is Melvin's "And that ain't right." And of course the lines " and wherever he lay his hat was his home." In one of the videos I have, David Ruffin is saying if Dennis ever sang "My Girl" better than he (David) did, he'd quit singing. But then he added, "I can't sing "Cloud Nine" the way Dennis can.
3. And, then, you know, any entertainment, sports or show business is all about sex appeal. An elderly lady who is a friend of mine watches the Atlanta Braves and said the other day, "Chipper Jones is getting fat; he had a belly when the season started. And Andruw Jones did too. If they don't thin down, I won't watch the Braves any more." No matter what the age, women want their entertainers and their athletes to be "lean, mean, (singing or batting) machines."
4. I remember hearing Eddie talking about all the technology taking away the actual singing, music, instruments, etc. It was very depressing to him. I often wondered why they didn't augment his voice at the end. Surely with mikes they could have done something. Actors in Broadway shows today often use voice mikes. At his best Eddie's voice had a persuasive quality that far outshone any of the other Tempts.
5. As for the Classic Five versus the present Tempts, something can be said for each period of time. I admire so much about the music of the Classic Five, particularly the variety present in the arrangments (How did they think of that?), but then there are times when I find the modern arrangements preferable. After all, I am accustomed to the present.
