Actually the group gets billed for the session time. At least that's what's in Otis' book...Debbie can tell you that. If Motown is in the business of making money, why did they release this noise and call it MUSIC? If Motown's still doing things that way, they're unique. I did read that in the book just as you guys did but they don't do things that way anymore. Based on what I've seen on my end, the record company pays for the session time. That's how it is that they can own the masters. You only pay for sessions these days if you don't have a record company behind you. The artist is, however, billed for promo - including any costs incurred when it comes to video production and "grass roots" promotion, etc. Ed

LOL! Ain't he though? He's laying low and he appears to be mismanaging the company. I'd buy that he didn't care about the current line-up of Tempts if he didn't appear to be blowing it on all fronts. They haven't had a hit record since India.Arie. The label seems to barely function and it's sad... I remember years back that there was talk of dissolving Motown into the Polygram Group at the time that Polygram bought up Motown and A&M. They were going to turn it into a reissue label. Then, they slid Brian McKnight and 98 Disease over there and it started to function again. 98 Disease is now history and Brian McKnight's last record crashed and burned. Given the current non-success of the label, they might as well do what they were gonna do and dissolve it They did it to A&M and MCA and they both had viable acts signed to their rosters. Motown doesn't even have that at this point. Sad, I know, but it's true nevertheless. Ed Edited 'cause I added stuff Really I haven't seen Massenburg since 1999, maybe 2000. Yeah I remember the big Brian McKnight signing. Toni Tony Tone! could have been there too, but they broke up, they did release a GH with the Motown label, small consolation. It also got that heavily promoted going nowhere CD from "Tone!", Dwayne Wiggins. Still suprised that Vannessa Williams didn't end up on Motown, maybe she was the smart one... Here's my problem--Motown isn't doing anything? Really "Legacy" is there best shot this year--I don't think Chico DeBarge has a third comeback in him and for the first time ever, Motown has nothing on the horizion, not even plans to rehab yet another stalled career. Only if the label had given "Legacy" the promotion Wiggins got.

Well, Chico's on Koch at the moment (where all artists go to die) and his album has bombed. I remember that video for Dwayne, "What's Really Goin' On". It got a pretty fair amount of play. I never heard the record but I did buy the twelve-inch of the single and I kinda liked it myself.
The last CD Vanessa Williams released in 1997, "Next", was a disaster, with only "Happiness" even charting. I remember that video only for the horribile mop Vanessa had on her head in the video...LOL! As I recall, Mercury dropped Vanessa after that as it was her second sluggish seller ("The Sweetest Days" didn't do so well either - though it did sort of spawn singles).
I agree totally that Motown has nothing coming. They can't depend on Brian McKnight, India.Arie (who's last album fell down the charts at breakneck speed and generated one hit single), or anyone else, really. Such a shame for a label that used to have multiple hits in a month...

Ed Yep, maybe Vanness Williams wouldn't of been a great addition, saw that "Happiness" video once before they yanked it off the air. Just visited the Motown's website--not too much fanfare for "Legacy." Oddly enough, the Temptations circa 1998 are on the front of the "New Motown" link. I clicked and it didn't work, the "Classic Motown" link did--talk about summing things up.

The new current side opened for me.
They have a lot of unknowns in their roster. Are you sure Michael McDonald's not helping Motown right now? I hear his songs everywhere. And I mean songs from his Motown album.
And when is Stevie's new album due? Think he'll make a come back? I am surprised at how Motown as a label is a laughing stock. Why aren't they being more inventive? Maybe try something new. I see Raekwon isn't listed anymore. I wonder what happened? That would have been interesting...
...Hit Seekers... seems like they gave up seeking...

Not too bad. You've got R&B acts from the '80 and '90 who won't get that high--again.
Not great, not too horrible.

you sound a little bitter there mike.....what's the matter?? the review ain't getting as much attention as the tempts?? this is all in your head that Legacy isn't a great record......even if the record was a flop(which it isn't) are you saying you take pleasure in others misfortunes??....that's pretty low man........... Now if I did take pleasure in other's misfourtunes ,that would put me in the same light as you. We can't have that. No bitterness here,pal...no name change, either!
