Then they would have been even more famous than they are today. You're halfway right ... Eddie would have been more famous ... Otis has around 4 fans .... So he would be up to what ... 5 now? ... Eddie would have zillions! ;D;D;D;D;D

Thanks, Kim, for sharing the letter and writeup with us. I guess the accident occurred in 1966, but the incident in May 1968, must have been shortly before David left the group.
A lot of people have written about David not being too friendly with the fans after a performance, or just disappearing. Even Hall and Oates have said it. Of the other four I have just heard good reports of their relationships with fans.
Otis was only 25 and Eddie 27 in 1966. But after that incident Otis and Eddie had a very scary plane trip in a storm.
AS to why these incidents didn't appear in the movie, you can't put everything in and what you do put in must be focused on the focal point. Besides it leaves something for us to talk about.
As to which ones appeared at Motown, remember all sources say that Berry Gordy first heard Otis Williams and the Distants at the St. Stephens Club and invited them to audition for him. When they did appear at Motown, they had Paul and Eddie with Otis, Melvin and Al.

Well, he'd apparently heard their record before heard them at St. Stepens, but don't you think that portrayal is a little unfair to Paul and Eddie? IF Barry gave Otis a card and didn't give one to Paul and Eddie (and we have no idea if he did or not, another reason why Eddie should have written a darn book) it was probably because they weren't even in town when the St. Stephens thing happened.
There is no doubt in my mind that with their talent that IF Paul and Eddie were around and IF they had a group together, if Barry heard them they would have gotten a card too. (And they may very well have.)

Seems to me that Hall & Oates had no expirence with David that would lead one to believe anything but good. They showed the photos of them back in the 60's when the two met them backstage. Daryl Hall said that he sang with the group backstage...David was not there...that doesn't mean that David was not nice to his fans. I have seen otherwise. Not read, but SEEN that not to be the case about David at all.

Oh yeah ............. thanks for reminding me.
Jane, it's unfortunate that you've only read about negative experiences with David but I can guarantee you that over the years, I've heard two positive stories about David for every negative one you could name.
These are/were complex individuals. I can be a jerk to people. Does that mean I'm a jerk to EVERYONE? Nope, sure doesn't.
