Yes, indeed. On the CD that I bought, that song seemed to stick out like a sore thumb, I felt. It just sounded so ... lifeless, listless ... I don't know.

I can't say the song would have been a bigger hit had David sung lead. It may have gone the same way other "David-led" songs went such as 'Cindy' and my favorite 'One Last Look'. The writer(s) and producer(s) made the right choice by giving Paul the lead. DLB was suited just for Paul. It seems to me, and I'm going by what I have heard about the man, that Berry Gordy had favorites and Paul did not appear to be one of Berry's favorites. That's just my 2 cents. I agree Curet30, first of all it was a B-side song and not intended to be a single. It so happened to become a great song when it was discovered by radio later on. Paul was absolutely the right choice for the song. If Paul wasn't a favorite it was because he asked questions and anybody who did got on the wrong side of Berry Gordy. Some say Berry was like the character on the Five Heartbeats, Big Red, when he wanted to be.

AnnaK...I'm wondering which CD or version you have? I *sorta* liked the song from the EOS box-set, but absolutely fell in love with the "LIVE" (at the Roostertail) version, and now the commercial release sounds a bit bland to me. I think David might have given the song a different spin, much as you described...I see (hear) Paul on this version being smooth and reassuring to the love he's trying to lure, not impart heartbreak but rather confidence in himself as the one she should trust in...(still talking about the "commercial" or "studio" version here) At the Roostertail he lets it ALL come out, every emotion is squeezed from the lyric.

I agree..K2..the "LIVE" version of DLB is the ish..if ya know what I mean!.....But personally ..I like BOTH of them...Paul was somewhat restricted on the studio version..that's probably why it's more mellow.

DON'T LOOK BACK...
In my efforts to revive this song into "public conscious" I have suggested to Earl Lewis that the Channels perform 'Don't Look Bank' as the Temptations did at the Roostertail. Earl is concerned that many folks will not receive this song since it is not familiar like 'My Girl', 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' and 'Get Ready'.
I think Earl can pull it off; he has the same range, in his natural voice, as Paul has. I know the Channels can work that background like Eddie, David, Melvin and Otis did. Put in the high energy like there was at the Roostertail and 'Don' Look Back' can be a fixture in the Channels' rep.

You saw Bernard workin' it with the Review, and I've never failed to see everybody up and dancin' when he does it. And you know his version is TAME compared to "Roostertail"

I am speaking of the version on the "Ultimate Collection" CD ... Maybe our sweet old Cheech could introduce me to the "Roostertail version" you all seem to talk about? I have no idea how that sounds ...
