heck no.. paul was the best choice for that song.. it certainly was not, not a big hit.. because he sang on it.

That is a TOUGH question.....DLB IS Paul Williams!..and I loves me some Paul...... BUT... I think it may have been a bigger hit if David had sung it.... for the simple fact, David had a larger following than Paul..and people were more familiar with David's voice........THEN AGAIN....if Paul had gotten the LEADS ( on singles) like he should have, the song probably would have done a whole lot better. ( didn't it get to #30-something on the charts?)

Yes, David would have made something real exciting of this song ... no question. But I also wonder why Paul didn't; he certainly could have ...

But I also wonder why Paul didn't; he certainly could have ... que the recorded version isn't as "live".. as the live version.. maybe that should have been the original recording.. but either way.. that song is tight.. some songs are just.. underrated.. even if they are good.. and david what could he have done? im not seeing it...

I was afraid you was going to make me say it. I think this song I've heard Paul sing wasn't sung as good as it could have been ... if this was the only thing I've ever heard of Paul, I'd not considered him a great singer ... Just my humble opinion ... Please don't be mad at me; there are songs by David I don't like either ;D

I can't say the song would have been a bigger hit had David sung lead. It may have gone the same way other "David-led" songs went such as 'Cindy' and my favorite 'One Last Look'. The writer(s) and producer(s) made the right choice by giving Paul the lead. DLB was suited just for Paul. It seems to me, and I'm going by what I have heard about the man, that Berry Gordy had favorites and Paul did not appear to be one of Berry's favorites. That's just my 2 cents.

I don't think it would have been a hit, no matter who sang it. It's kind of a throw away tune, which is probably why it's on the B side of "My Baby," which wasn't really a hit song either & only peaked at #13 on the pop charts. I get a sense Motown may have been throwing Paul a bone here. He was served much better by "No More Water In The Well," which was only an album track.
A more important question might be...would "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," "...Skin Deep" or "I Wish It Would Rain" have still been hits if Paul sung 'em instead of Ruff.
I like to think they would. I think the immediacy of those tracks have as much to do with it as the vocal performance, & Paul definitely had the juice to put them over.

Well, even if it never had turned into a big hit , I think I know know how David had made it at least more pleasant to listen to. He would have emphasized, for example, the "walk" with one of his ah, oh, sort of making it sound like someone really had to force him-/herself to walk and forget, I think he would have conveyed the struggle it takes to do such a think as not looking back Does that make sense?

Oh my gosh ... what does that mean: "having a barbeque"? Does that mean they finally found a reason to burn me alive? But I really think David would have done "something" with the song ... because the lyrics could have been turned into a stronly emotional message ... like forget what they've (the board members, for example) done to you ... just trust me, and we'll leave that :bs: behind us ... David must have known something about poetry
