Has anyone heard "Need it" by The VoiceMasters? I know that Melvin Franklin provided the bass vocals on the song. As a matter of fact, after hearing the song, Otis decided to track down Melvin and ask him to sing with the Distants.
Is the song available anywhere? Does anyone know? I've always wanted to hear it.

Thought I'd bump this. Has anyone heard this track or know where I can hear it? I know it was on the Anna Records label.

Nevermind, guys. I found it. Melvin was 14 years old when he sung on this track. Even way back then, his voice was as strong and deep as ever.

Wow! This is a remarkably well preserved recording of the group. All the material I've heard up to now was of the lowest quality imaginable. Thanks for sharing.

The reason I couldn't find it for all these years is because Otis misspelled the title in his autobiography. He said the song was called "Need it" but the song is in fact called "Needed." lol.
One brilliant thing about the track is that this is before you could produce real magic in the recording studio. This song was recorded live with a band; no vocal stacking/layering, no echo effects, no samples, no looping, none of that stuff. Melvin's voice was really THAT strong on this song. Recordings made back in the day like this one are completely honest, and that's what I love about them. It wasn't until the mid 1960s' when the technology got advanced enough to where you could layer vocals and record different instruments on different tracks and then mix them all together at the end. This song here was recorded all in one take.

Hey. Does anyone know of any other tracks Melvin recorded before joining The Distants?
