What performance were they reenacting when they first performed "my girl" in the miniseries? I know Ive seen it, and Im very convinced that there is an actual version of that performance. Can anyone tell me if it does exsist and where to find it? Ive been looking for it since 98 and no dice! Thank you.

wow i never really thought of that. i guess they were performing the tempts on ed sullivan, the medley, when they did (mygirl, losing you, all i need, and girl why you wanna make me blue) but the real tempts suits were tan, whereas the miniseris gave them black suits. i have alot of their footage, and thats the only one i can think of them reenacting.

No, thats not it. That Ed Sullivan performance was actually done in 67/68 and it is sung and not lipsynced like the one Im thinking of. This one was done about 2 or 3 months after my girl was released in late 64. The one I beleive I saw was exactly like the one on the miniseries. It too was in black and white. Also, the tempts were wearing black tuxedos, theyre were black rectangles in the background, and I specifically remember David Ruffin in his "Bufont/Pompadore/Process" hairstyle. It was the exact one. I just dont know why I can never find it, especially when that particular performance seems to be the one that defined them.

True, but the first time they were on Ed Sullivan was when they sang a medley, right. And that performance was from 67'. The one in the movie was from 65'. I heard it was American Bandstand from someone who said they saw that actual performance from 65' when they were a teenager.

could be. but they still need to put that video out there so we can see. tempts fans need to see their first perfomance, its like mandatory for us.

I do not think the re-enactment of "My Girl" in the miniseries was supposed to be a particular performance. I believe it was to emphasize their top ranking by appearing on Ed Sullivan plus the impact of "My Girl."
The Temptations' first public appearance on the stage with "My Girl" was at the Fox Theatre in Detroit right after they had finished recording it. Paul introduces the song with "And now for our latest release on the Gordy (or whatever name he used) label, "My Girl." It is on a CD, but it was not filmed. I think it may have been at the annual Motown Christmas Show at the Fox. I'd have to look up which CD this first recorded appearance of a Tempts performance of "My Girl" with its introduction appears on.

Maybe, but they did sing My Girl on Amercian Bandstand though, if we could find out the year it would help alot.

u could be on to something janebse. in otis book he implies that their success did not start until 1965, when they got mygirl. he then goes on to state that at the ed sullivan show, they really became noticed, he describes their suits of which they weared that day, which is the same discription of the suits worn in the miniseries, he says they performed my girl and another tune. he also goes on to explain how nervous each of them were, knowing that this performance would mark the beginning of their success.
so i think the movie wasn't really focusing on their first show, but the first show that started their success.

MY FRIENDS, IT DOES EXSIST! However, I know this performance was not the first "My Girl" ever performed. This performance was lipsynced just as it was on the miniseries, it wasnt sung as in 67 or at the fox theatre for that matter. The only inaccuracy in the miniseries as far as it was shown, was the fact that it was in color at one point. This performance was only in black and white. It was 1965 and it was definately a TV show. Im sure it was on American Bandstand or The Ed Sullivan show. Ive been looking up both Ed Sullivan and ABS on google, trying to see if I could look at each stage and catch a similar background "Black Rectangles". Ive found one almost identical, but now I lost it, and Im not sure what show it is..... Ill find it!

The only reason it's shown in color in the movie, is because the camera gives us, the viewer, the audience's perspective.Notice how the camera zooms in and takes us into the television, and when it zooms out and gives us the family member's perspective it's in black and white again. So it wasn't inaccurate at all. But I hear everything else you're saying.

I mean that the original version was only seen in black and white. Some other fans here claim that its the "in color" melody version from 67, and they get it confused because for a brief period, they see it in color.
