Ive always thought DB Woodside looked like Otis more than Malik Whitfield, and also the other way around. The only reason they probably werent switched for the movie was obviously for voice purposes. Anyways, before ever being able to catch a glipse of the real Tempts in action, I had only seen the miniseries. Since the only person I could identify was David Ruffin at the time , I would look at the old albums thinking that Otis was Melvin and Melvin was Otis. Some of you may agree with me on why, look at my comparison....

You're exactly right. That's why I got the Temptations names confused after I saw the movie.

I totally agree! I wonder if it was a contract thing, where Malik Whitfield had the bigger role, even though Leon was the bigger name.

I think they were all really well cast except for Melvin (Blu)...DB Woodside looked nothing like him Melvin had such a cute, sort of round face with big eyes and a big happy smile...he just glowed DB Woodside has smaller eyes and long face...nothing like Melvin IMHO I think Leon was masterful at creating David Ruffin....and I also really appreciate the guy who played Dennis Edwards...he looked like him and captured his "moves" when singing very well I thought

DB has no accent to speak of and didn't put one on for the purposes of filming. Melvin was born in Montgomery, Alabama and spend a lot of his childhood in Detroit. We all know Melvin had an accent. The fact that DB didn't affect one was really distracting - to be honest.

Yeah. DB's voice wasn't even deep enough to play Melvin. I wish they would have picked ME to play that role. I have the voice and talent to pull it off. ;D

Since I came from the era where The Tempts (C5 & HOF5) were still making music, the recognition wasn't an issue for me. I did like that they chose lesser know actors to play them. It helped me focus on the movie. Well that is until Christian showed his face . I still love this movie. I guess they could've found a better match for Melvin. Leon did his thing, I didn't care a whole lot who played Otis....lol, I just loved the movie.
