Yes, he's very serious.
I, myself, didn't appreciate the dialogue during the dinner table scene at first, either, but I've also come to accept the movie for what it is...a movie.
At the end of the day, David Ruffin was a drug addict who had abusive relationships with women. He got himself fired from the biggest group in the world through his selfish, unprofessional, irresponsible behavior and ultimately threw his life away on addiction...disappointing a lot of people in the process.
I'm saying this as a huge David Ruffin fan!
That much about his life is well-documented...no need to even ask Otis' opinion. With respect to the TV mini-series, Otis didn't write the script. It was based -- to varying degrees -- on his book. If you haven't read his book, yet, it's difficult to challenge his credibility. You'll find quite a few things in the movie that don't match up with what Otis actually said in his autobiography.
Unlike any of us, Otis Williams was there every step of the way. It's clear just how much he admired and loved each of the other members. They all had their negatives, but he's quick to point out that the magic they had when they stepped on stage together was something that can never be duplicated. Each man had his own personal pain to deal with -- and suffered to different degrees before he passed -- but Otis has had to live through and deal with the loss of ALL of them.
Through it all, he's not only survived but kept the Temptations alive for each of us...the fans That's not a coward...that's a legend.

Oh, and getting back to the original topic...
What were you hoping for, if I might ask...a scene of an emaciated "Eddie" -- ravaged by cancer and already missing one lung -- gasping for his last breath?
No thanks. I love the man too much to have to sit through a portrayal of that. It was handled tactfully.
If you've lived long enough to see loved ones suffer from the disease, "lung cancer" is all you need to hear to get the full picture. I know all too well what that entails...as do many, many others. We don't need a re-enactment.
As for the attention to Melvin's death, it was appropriate. Melvin was the one man who had been with Otis the entire time. After Paul took his own life...after David, Eddie and Dennis departed...after all the personnel changes through the years...Melvin was still there right by Otis' side. There was a special tribute paid to him for good reason.
Likewise, the true depth of his suffering and details of his death were not put in the movie because it was simply too painful to recount...no purpose would've been served by showing someone so beloved by so many suffering so much.
It's just a movie...remember that.

No one mentions that the executive producer on this movie was Susanne DePasse and some of her recollections are in this TV movie as well. Stories about the Temptations are legendary. Can everybody else be wrong and David and Eddie the only ones right? Give me a break on this Otis lied all over the place stuff. I would be more apt to believe him than any hanger on...any roadie...and ex- worker who has an axe to grind. Sorry but the man has been there the whole time and just cause he's the only one left...don't make him the murderer. These men smoked, drank, drugged, womanized and just about any other vice you could think of, all of them. Doesn't change my opinion of their work one iota. Otis didn't make them do that. They did it to themselves and one day you will see that for yourself and instead of walking around casting blame..........you will look to enjoy the legacy that is the Temptations. If you don't like Otis, that is your right....go see the Review or Richard or GLenn's group. I can back up my statements without the book or the movie. I knew what I knew long before any of that came out. I have been going to see the Temptations since 1965. There's way more to the story than some 4 hour mini-series or one member's book could ever tell.
I am a Temptations fan, tried and true. Always have been and always will be...no matter who is in the group. I may not like all the members but the group is what this is about....not one member. To me it is about the music. It will always be about the music for me. Everything else is just irrelevent!!!!

Ya, I know. I saw that court post. That was a TERRIBLE lie to put in the movie, no matter who's decision it was. I guess they needed some sort of "villian" character", though they had Flynn for that so the lies about David were most unessicary. Being a new fan though, when I first saw the movie I completley bought everything in it as the truth. Lol, I always used that dinner scene David comment as a deffense for him during the Motown Picknick, I told myslef that it was why he treated Claudette the way he did. But I know better now. Learned much here on the board.....anyways; I still love the movie for what it is. =D That wasn't Claudette on the party. It was Tammi Terrell, DRL a confirmed drug addict herself, who according to her friends prided herself for kicking "David's ass as hard as he kicked hers" when they were at it ... I guess that lady didn't really need Blue or O. to demand respect for her

I guess that lady didn't really need Blue or O. to demand respect for her wasnt that also in Genna's book, and in Raynomas book. and .. dang.. It could have been slightly mentioned in Gordy's book.. That Tammy took it and gave it right back to David? He still had a great voice tho, along with all of them.

and also.. my goodness. they were young kids.. you know how stupid young kids can be.. all that instant fame, and how things were run at Motown, them being new to the business.....being in the public eye..having everyone do for you because of who you are, more times then not. .ya get a big head... ya learn..... ya grow up......, you mature....... wasnt De Passe mentioned in Gordys book.. or maybe it was Raynoma's that gordy asked her to stand in front of everyone.. and do something pretty embarrassing, in front of everyone, while he called her fat in front of everyone at the studio, and because Gordy wanted her to.. she did. I guess it took more the the average ...B*... to get ahead back then, so I can see her helping add to the spice of the movie... be it true or not. I thank my lucky stars Im not the same 20 yr old I WAS at this stage of my life. ...and the Tempts at some point grew from their young nieviety.. and matured and learned.. just like any red blooded young person.. and with some that are in the public eye.. its pretty hard to come back to reality. Is all water under the bridge far as Im concerned.. I enjoy the the guys.. past and present.. and thats is what matters...
