I read the book and saw the movie, but was the movie true to how David was informed he was fired from the Tempts. I remember Otis saying David was upset he wa fired but didn't go any further. Did David come to Hitsville and was given a piece of paper and flipped on the Tempts(like in the movie), or was he informed by phone or another way? I was just wondering if anybody knew.

Leon's face was so sad when he turned around. Great bit of acting. I've always heard David was: "Fired by written notice". Another sad piece of Temps history. ...raindrops will hide my teardrops...

That scene was just too good to have actually happened that way. I need to go re-read that part of the book again. Just can't imagine the other four guys being there and staring out the window at him like that.

Ruffin knew he was fired by the time he was jumping on stage and snatching the mic from Dennis .Remember those were his songs, wouldn't you get the urge to do the same thing, I know I would.LOL ;D Nah, he was handed his walking papers, I'm not sure if the way it was shown in the movie was true, but I know he was handed his walking papers. I thought Berry Gordy gave him the papers. I'm not exactly sure, but don't quote me. ;D

Movies have to get a lot of information in within a few minutes. Yes, David was notified way before the Copacabana appearance. However, I don't thinkit was at the Copacabana that David jumped on the stage. It is true he did it, but not there.

According to Otis...
The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back came in June 1968 when David skipped out during a 10-day stand at the Versailles in Cleveland to catch the act of his then-girlfriend, Gail Martin (daughter of Dean), instead. Berry Gordy and Shelly Berger were aware of the problems the other members had been having with David and respected their decision to cut him loose. The Motown legal department drew up a document stating that David's services were no longer needed with the Temptations and all four groupmates signed it.
In the third week of June, David was called in for a meeting at Motown HQ where (road manager) Don Foster informed him of the group's decision. To my knowledge, no other members were present at the meeting.
An interesting note (at least, to me), the Paul Williams-led "How Can I Forget" -- released as the B-side to Eddie's "Please Return Your Love to Me" (July 1968) -- was actually intended to be a David Ruffin lead. I believe the track was recorded June 29, 1968...just days after David's firing.
