You know, we were wondering for a very long time what the name of the group was ... until we realized that it was written in big black letters on the board announcing their appearance at the right at the beginning of the movie. ::laughing :laughing

Yep, it's "Speedoo" (you'll also see it as "Speedo") by the Cadillacs. Well, now they often call me Speedoo But my real name is Mr. Earl Mmm-mm-hmm..."Speedoo" and "Mr. Earl" refer to lead vocalist Earl Carroll. The story is that he got the nickname "Speedy" for his calm, laid-back demeanor...along the same lines as calling a chubby guy "Slim," I suppose. The Cadillacs had several hits through the mid-to-late '50s -- you might have heard "Gloria," "Peek-a-Boo" or "Zoom" before. Earl Carroll left to join the Coasters in 1958 and the remaining group disbanded in the early '60s. The lineup in September 1955, when "Speedoo" was recorded was: Earl Carroll (lead tenor) James Clark (tenor) LaVerne Drake (tenor) Johnny Willingham (baritone) Bobby Phillips (bass) Believe it or not, Earl Carroll and ( I think) Bobby Phillips still perform as the Cadillacs. They were here at the Benedum Center about five years ago for one of those Legends of Doo-Wop PBS specials. Ya know, someone who might have more information would be curet30...as I recall, the Channels gave an excellent performance of "The Closer You Are" at that same show. Did you know... Cholly Atkins was the man responsible for helping the Cadillacs polish their famous stage antics and dance routines...just as he did for the Tempts years later.

Lewis. Their guitar player serves as their 4th voice. They still put on a great show and make the Channels shake in their boots today.

Thank you, curet. I was hoping you'd see this thread. Pittsburghers love their Doo Wop! Hopefully, you enjoyed your time here as much as we appreciated having you. TJ Lubinsky does a great job of putting those shows together. Not only do they help keep the memories of yester-year alive, but they also introduce people my age and younger to some of the finest music ever recorded. Hey, what do ya say...let's go find Jerry Butler and do it again!

I know alot of NY'ers are gonna rag for me saying this but in the 10 years I have been with Earl Lewis & The Channels, we get no greater love than the fans from Pittsburgh. We appreciate you supporting the music and for the younger folks getting "hip" to the pioneers of R&B vocal group harmony - I'm still a baby at 41 ;D
