In the movie you saw David sell his Lincoln car for crack, because he didn't have any money. He first tried to give the drug dealer two tickets to the Tempts concert but they expired. Then he handed the man his keys and said "Ill sign you over the pink slip." Does anyone know if this really happened or was this just "Hollywood" again? I know that crack users will do anything for crack but, did David do this? If this is true how did anyone find out? No other members were there with him at the time. I know in the book Otis said David had trouble, especially in Detroit , staying off drugs during the Reunion tour. If this is made up, then that is pretty low. I would never make up something like this on someone who was my friend; even for a movie. That's one thing I didn't like about the movie;David was potrayed as only a drug addict and a singer. In the book it expressed his other sides.

OK, I tried 2 avoid this but I'm gonna answer it anyhow...First of all it's worth remembering that what you saw in the movie was NOT necessarily the way it was. A lot of what was depicted in the film was added 4 DRAMATIC purposes...a good example of this is the movie "Lady Sings The Blues"....an excellent film, BUT it was NOT Billie Holiday's real story. The same can be said about the Tempts' movie. There is a big difference between the truth and something that is BASED upon a true story...which the Tempts film fell into the latter category. Bottom line is, seeing is not always believing.
The Lincoln in question was not David's car, but it belonged to a woman he was seeing at the time. Whether he actually sold it is questionable, since he was not the owner.

Welcome DC!!!
I agree with the Diva. Most biopics freely utilize dramatization or "dramatic license". This one was truly no exception. The differences between Otis' book and the movie are numerous. Often, straight fact is somewhat plain and doesn't translate to TV well, so they dress things up to make the facts more interesting. The one that sticks out to me is the one where Al gets fired right after he lights Paul up with the beer bottle and then, the four remaining Temps go right back on stage. I don't know about you, but I don't think I'd be injury-free after someone smashed a beer bottle into my face. In reality, Paul was rushed to the hospital for his injuries, Paul forgave him for it, and Al was subsequently fired months later. They didn't even do the argument properly. Al was the one who wanted to get back on stage and Paul was the one who'd had enough and wanted to pack it in...

This was taken out of Tony Turner's book. NOT OTIS' book.

Some crack addicts have done EVEN worse. I've seen women that I've known personally become addicted and prostitute themselves for crack. So, that type of thing is typical behavior for crack addicts. My guess is that the producers of the mini-series depicted that scene for dramatic value.

Hey that cat's Lincoln belongs to me now actually! I was wonderin what the hell all that white powder was about on the seats and dusted on the interior! And I looked in the glove compartment and found a pair of black-framed specs, as well as an unmarked cassette featuring some great obscure songs that sounded like David singing, but it sounded like it was done in his parent's basement or something, lol! i wasn't sure of myself, however, after I saw this movie I def knew that Lincoln was his, man! If he was still alive i would've told him the least he could've done was vaccuum the car.LOL Cheers! Rob P.S. "y'all know I'm kiddin, right?"
