Edward Patton, one of the members of Gladys Knight and Pips backup singers has passed away in Atlanta, He was 66 years old. He died from complications following a stroke after being beset by other health related issues. The Pips were noted for their energetic choregraphy and at times gave the TEmptations a run for their money during concert shows........I can attest to that personally. They were so popular at one point they appeared on the Richard Pryor Show by themselves.. After the Pips stopped touring with Gladys they recorded two lps on the Casablanca label before health problems caused Edward not to be able to perform. William Guest and "Bubba" Knight were the other Pips. Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded for Motown from 1966-73.........before moving on to Buddah Records.....some well known Hits by the group are: I Heard It Through THe Grapevine Neither One Of Us Midnight Train To Georgia Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me Save THe Over Time(For Me) RIP Edward Patton.................

Oh no! RIP brother.
...does anyone have a picture? I'm not sure which one it is. I know what Bubba looks like, but I can't match the names and faces to the other 2..

It gives us a sense of our own mortality to see our idols leaving us now due to old age, cancers, natural causes and not booze, drugs or violence like the "good old days." He will be sorely missed. :crying :crying

I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live with Smokey and the Miracles and seeing the Pips move and sing was an experiance in it self. I saw them a few years ago on tv, I can't remember if it was an award show or not, an Edward was in a wheelchair. Once again the heavenly choir is enriched with a very talented singer who brought so much pleasure to so many millions of people. RIP my brother , you will be missed.

I actually met Mr. Patton around 1977-78. His son, Eddie Jr., and I attended the Will-O-Way Apprentice Theater in Bloomfield Hills, MI together, where we attended drama classes under the tootelege (sic) of Celia Turner. I was 13, Eddie Jr. was five (we were two of three black students in those classes, and every time I saw him, I would say "What's Happening, Eddie?" and slap him five). I was like his big brother in that class, and we did a production of "Oliver Twist" together One night we were performing, and I noticed this guy sitting in the audience with a pair of shades on! It distracted me so, I couldn't concentrate on my performance, but there was something familiar about him! During an intermission, I got to speak with him. I told him my name is Michael (my middle and preferred name) Rowls. He asked me was I any relation to Lou Rawls. I told him "We're still trying to figure that one out." (Although I met Lou back in 1986, I didn't find out until last year that he's my father's half-brother). After the play was over, I found out he was Eddie Jr's father, and that he was one of the PIPS! I never saw him anymore after that, as I got expelled for three days from grade school, and my mother revoked my drama school privilege! Eddie Jr probably wouldn't remember me, but I'd sure love to see him again (he would be about 52 now). My belated condolences to the family! Wish I had found this sooner!
