Well Ken- Du this thread underscores what I have been saying all along about this board's label of THE LEAN YEARS. I believe it was titled that way because they don't know the songs as opposed to not liking them. That's akin to saying there is nothing on Disc 4 & 5 of the EOS box set. I will be the first to agree that those songs weren't hits but some of them were very very good and just because you never heard them doesn't mean the Temptations weren't good then. I don't know why that title makes me mad. I just know that for ME a Temptation fan from the start, the only lean times were when they didn't put an lp out. I know for a fact I have changed a few minds in regards to that era. It also gives you a better feel for the voice of GLenn Leonard who seems to be left out when it comes to singing. I know Melvin loved his voice as much as any other than Eddie. We are a society of people who want to be comfortable and mostly are resistant to new things we don't know. So while we are sitting around listening to the computer or in our car, or jogging with our walkman we tend to play stuff that we can sing to or songs we know make us feel good. But if you are a fan of a group, you should sit down a listen to the stuff you don't know the same way you listen to things you all ready know and you might b e surprised at what you might like from the so called lean era. That's how you learn new songs. I truly believe that as great as My Girl is, had it not been played over and over and over it wouldn't be ingrained in your mind as it is. I didn't say it wasn't great but it may not have had the same impact.

In the spirit of peace and love I agree with both of you! I agree with what I think Aba is saying and that is that My Girl had a greater chance than most of the Tempts' songs, and that's true, but I agree with Kalisa, that song is one of the greatest songs ever written and it would have been regardless. Now, I agree with Aba when it comes to songs like "Get Ready" which I think is NOT as great in the broader perspective when we compare it to many of the same songs from that era. On the flip side, "Cindy" is a far superior song imo, but it never got the air play that "Get Ready" did.

Of course I meant no disrespect to the national anthem. But it is a song with world wide airplay and mass appeal. But how did it get that way.? The songs during the lean years do not compare to My Girl....I admit that but there are some as good as Get Ready for sure. I would never say that those songs belong in the same shopping cart as My Girl but they deserve a listen and like you said sometimes it takes more than a listen before it gets you. But if you played these songs half as much as you hear My Girl you'd have a different perspective.
And I love it when my comments elicit respones form the top two honchos of the board. That means I got some clout around here or else I'm about to get clocked....one or the other. I sure hope its the former and not the latter!! ;D

Kalisa I am not assuming more airplay would have made the songs classic by any means. But they would ahve been KNOWN like say...TREAT HER LIKE A LADY. That's all I'm saying cause i know it was a different time and different music. But in my heart I believe that there were some very good songs during that time that only for lack of notice are they not better known. I just want them known, I don't care where they rank.
Just like the song in this thread. It's just a funky little song. Not a lot to it but if you know Gotta Find A Way To Get You Back off Cloud NIne then you would know this one off of the TEMPTATIONS.

On the flip side, "Cindy" is a far superior song imo, but it never got the air play that "Get Ready" did. What Ivory meant to say was in her opinion...Cindy is better...right? 1$-) I agree with Kalisa to a certain extent...I agree that it is a beat, a lyric or a particular melody that grabs you about a song. Thats what does it for me when it comes to Get Ready..... AND if its "grabbin'" everyone well of course they are going to call and request it which will help it get more airplay. Thus, making the song more popular. I believe part of the reason My Girl is so ingrained, is because it was their #1. Its a classic, an icon...if you walk down the street(not Richards ;D) and ask the average person to name a Temptations song they will say My Girl. Its as american as mom and apple pie. Im going to share something with you all that I have only told ABA... I only became a Tempt-a-holic less than a year ago(no shame in that better late than never)...so I WAS that average person on the street. One day a few years ago I was shopping for a CD I saw Pheonix Rising...I said to myself this must be some OTHER Temptations...not the My Girl Tempts(quiet Mike!...you know what Im getting at). In the car in 2000 I heard Treat Her Like a Lady for the 1st time and I asked James who sang that song because immediately I was "hooked" on it, imagine my surprise when he tells me The Temptations...I looked at him confused and said the My Girl Temptations??(again MIKEY you know what Im getting at here).. I'd had no idea that they made it out of the sixties...so thats just to let you know...what ...well Im not even sure what point I was trying to make anymore...so, sorry.. Oh but I think alot of what made My Girl what it is today was the timing... back then. If you ask me my favorite Tempts song My Girl isn't it...

tHAT'S INTEReSTING BECAUSE mY gIRL IS NOT MY FAVORITE EITHER. It's the best Temptation song no doubt but not my favorite. I Could Never Love Another, Treat Her Like A LAdy, My Love Is True and Look What YOu Started are four songs I think are my favorites. It's a matter of tastes. The Temptations have so many songs it's hard to pick one. But I understand KIKIaj's thought. As a newcomer and not knowing the Temps were still around.......it's easy to think My Girl is it.

I am a member of that long-acronymed group that Ivory formed in support of "My Girl" but that song is FAR from my favorite Temptations song. Far. I mean, seriously, if it were up to me, we'd be playing "You'll Lose A Precious Love," "What Love Has Joined Together," and "Who You Gonna Run To" into oblivion. I think "My Girl" is also the Temptations SECOND best single (I'm sorry, but "Since I Lost My Baby" is far too beautiful). My Girl is more like a pop-soul masterpiece because everything is great. But "Since I Lost My Baby"... talk about FLAWLESS.
