Hey, just thought i'd share this. You really CAN have Miracles in fashion.
I made no plans to go to Barrister's Ball (the law school formal), because, well, I didn't want to fly solo. So, I brought no formal dresses down to school w/ me, because, why the heck would I need one.
Earlier this week, a couple friends convince me to go with the single girls' clique, saying it just won't be fun w/o you Nish (I coulda told them that!). So, I call mom, and ask her to send me my dark purple velvet column dress from about 6 years ago in high school. I open the package yesterday, and it's the WRONG DRESS. Night before event, no dress... bad situation. So I said "great, I'm not going, I can do research in the library." But the friends say "NO! NO!" and I say "YES! YES! It isn't fated for me to have a fun valentine's day. I'm supposed to study and then listen to sad songs for the remainder of the nite." Apparently not. Today, I got up brite and early to go with my friend to Dillard's. We play fashion emergency. I find a GREAT red dress with an asymmetrical hem for thirty bucks. Spectacular.

Well, I'm gonna have to lecture you about why you should NOT shop at Dillard's later but in the mean time.......... YAY!!!!!!! I know you're gonna have SO much fun! Pictures! We want pictures! And anyway, don't feel bad, even if you don't have a date, YOU can still fit into a dress you wore in HIGH SCHOOL!!!!! ............. That's like WAY better than having a date for Valentines!

Ooh, I think you should clue me in. Do I need to boycott Dillard's? And you know what, in the pit of my stomach, I think I have a sense of the reason why. You'll have to e-mail me so I can take an economic stand. Thankfully, I haven't bought anything full price from them! Does that count? Fun Fun Fun! Actually, the dress fits me better now than it did in H.S. I'm more Mary now, back then I was more Diana. I sure wish I had it. Anyway, I suppose footloose and fancy free is a nice way to be.

I had read things about not only discriminatory practices at Dillards, but also about sweatshops....but then I read that Dillards was a corporate supporter of the NAACP--but maybe that came later. I never know what to believe anymore! Is it one of these things, Ivory? Peach

I worked for Dillard's for two years and never saw what I would consider to be a store policy of racially-motivated practices. That's not what I had in mind. What I have in mind is how they screw over their employees. Associates do not work on commission, but on a slightly different system. They have a goal sales per hour and if they meet that, they get a bonus. That's all well and good. But if an associate does NOT meet their goal, their pay is cut. I've seen associates who've been there twenty years or more have their pay cut with no recognition given to their length of service, no leniancy given to what kind of worker they were and no adjustment made when the store as a whole is doing poorly. In short, Dillard's SUCKS!!!!

Again, *I* am not aware of any company-sponsored policies of racial discrimination. Associates are instructed on how to treat all customers fairly regardless of any demographic classification. Does that always happen? Of course not. But is there a company policy to treat people unfairly? Like I said, I'm not aware of any. All of the stories that web site lists seem to relate to alleged shoplifting incidents. I've never seen anyone abused by staff or security but have seen a 100 lb female (alleged) shoplifter brusie and bloody a 6'4" department manager and I'm aware of a manager being maced by an assailant. Another manager had a knife pulled on him. Again, just telling you what I know. The security who works for Dillard's (at least at the store where I worked) are all off-duty cops, so if there are incidents of alleged abuse or murder, well, you do the math........ My father works as a mole for the NAACP (so I guess if there are any white-supremist folks reading the board, please skip this paragraph, ha ha) and, among other things, helped them bring the law suit against Cracker Barrel ( www.pressroom.com/~afrimale/cracker.htm ) so IF *I* had seen any company-sponsored racialy biased practices, BELIEVE ME, y'all would have heard about it by now.

Ooh Nish! Send me some pics too!
If I could compare my shape to one of the Supremes, I'd have to say that I'm a Scherrie or a Susaye.

Sukka, THANKS. Likewise, my SD SOUL CAT! ;D Diva, gotcha covered, baby. We did the whole Kyoto expensive hibachi dining thing... yummy. And I must have overheard 2011 children saying "Mommy, why are they dressed up." I guess six girls on Valentine's day nite, only two of whom are with dates, dressed up, looks odd. We were all hairsprayed up, yet we dared stand before the hibachi grill fire... Risky Dining to the fullest. After dinner, we had to make the run back to the grooming place (aka my place!) and walk to the school to catch the shuttles to the country club place. It was horrid weather for spaghetti straps, sprayed up hair, and HIGH HIGH ultra HIGH sandals, rain and cold wind. Nonetheless, we made it to this place unscathed. Elegant cocktail laughs shared as I sipped on Sparkling Cider and a Madras. Seeing all the classmates getting spiffed up. The band running the gamut by playing everything from Nelly to Marvin Gaye. Chocolate and gobs of it at the hors d'oeuvres spread. Going to bed terribly late (or early), and talking about it on Saturday. All these things (and lots more) made the formal REALLY fun!

silly ivory snow!!!!and lots of it!
tennessee=tennesnow!
neeeeshaa- the reason people thought you were dressed up is because they were dressed down. for valentine's day we went to an upscale chinese restaurant- benzes, lexus, beemers, infinit's,jags, outside- and sitting at the next table was a ''businessman'' and his secretary-dressed in jeans and ok shirt-and he made several calls on his cellphone. i ignored as best as i could -elise and i were dressed -nice slacks, nice shirt, and some folks were dressed like tattoo salesmen, some were actually dressed nice. some. casual wear, casual sex, casual america=casualties. one reason why kikiaj is going over to clean up bush's mess is because we had casual security-or in other words-none.
