Tempts, I think Richard had a hip replacement a LONG time ago, a couple of years ago, not recently.

So what is a hip replacement done for? I've heard of someone having one, because of arthritis. But what I don't know is, how do they take the hip out? Does the patient have to be cut open, the hip taken out, and the new one put in? And how long does a person have to carry a cane after the operation?

my best friend has a new hip. his is made of stainless stell and it feels cold inside his leg. he says it takes a while to get used to but he can walk much better with the new hip rather than his obsolete old hip which wore down with age and arthritis.

Well, I don't know about hips, but my mother has had both of her knees replaced because she's worn her God-given ones out after walking hospital hallways (she's a nurse) for 30 years.

They cut her open on the backside of her knee and took out the bone and replaced it ones made of titanium or something like that (but she doesn't set off the airport metal detector.) She was back to work in about a month but she recovered a bit faster than normal because she is physically incapable of sitting still and doing nothing for more than five seconds. She's a little ball of spit-fire.

I would imagine they had to cut Richard open to replace his hip. Not unless they went in through the nose. ;D
