In today's paper there was a writeup about Hubie Brown and his coaching of the Memphis Grizzlies. Since Harry said being a Temptation was a lot like being in the NBA, perhaps ABA would comment on this one.
Sort of paraphrasing the article"
"What Brown expects from his players is very basic. He has just four rules: 1. Be on time 2. Play hard 3. Know your position 4. Know when to pass and when to shoot
"You never make rules you don't enforce," Brown says. "I've never had a lot of rules. You adhere to the rules or there are consequences. The rules aren't anything that you wouldn't expect of an athlete at the professional level. It sounds very simple, but it's very hard. It's hard on players who are selfish."
"If you don't do what's expected (during games), you;re coming out. Definitely," says Lorenzen Wright. "You get a warning. If you don't get it right after the first warning, you;re comoing out of the game. Everybody knows that."

Well Merry Christmas Janebse.......I go all the way back to the ABA when Hubie coached the ABA champion Kentucky Colonels. He is old school and a favorite of mine because of his discipline.
I love his four rules. When you have a team you should keep it to a minimum on the rules but they should apply to everybody.
I think he said it very well in that you shouldn't have rules that you can't enforce. In his case how much backing does he have? Will the owner back him if he sits his best player. You have to have that clout to enforce any rule. Pat Riley has it. Phil Jackson has it.
If you're going where I think you are, then we have to determine prior to when we know for sure that Otis was in charge, who had the clout. If you make a rule and your star doesn't adhere to it, what do you do? Two choices: 1, change the rule or 2, change the personel.
if the team or group is the important thing then you have some tough choices to make sometimes. Just last week, trinity college here in Texas was celebrating making it to the championship in the nation in their division. The starting quarterback and star of the team was arrested for intoxication on the river walk and the coach promptly sat his tail down for what was the biggest game in school history. Well they lost big time but the message was sent. In order for him to maintain control, have respect of the rest of the team, he had to do what he did. You cannot fault the coach, you blame the player for not having respect for his teammates.
In Hubie's case he doesn't have a good team. I don't know how many years away from contending they are. But by the time they are contenders they will have one thing.....discipline. In his case he can make as many rules as he wants because he has Jerry West's backing and he doesn't have a major veteran star to deal with. That does make a difference.
Since I was not there, I can't say what rules David Ruffin or Dennis Edwards broke. I don't include Eddie Kendrick because he left and was not booted. How many warnings did they get? I once said that they should have always had a Richard in the background as an understudy in case something like that happened. One, it would have saved a lot of heartache and given the person who committed the rules infraction a chance to fix the problem. He could have his spot when he was ok to perform again.
And one other note......in my entire career I was never fined, late for a game or practice or a plane. I only recieved one technical foul in all that time also. It was too important to me to be there. It is a record that I am most proud of and I want my children to adhere to. I believ that time is precious. Don't waste mine and I promise not to waste yours.

Yes,Merry Christmas,Jane. The board thought that you & I ran off somewhere together. ;D I don't think that Otis and Hubie have the same job description. Hubie is the coach,Otis is more like the team captian. And for the record,Dennis left on his own the first time. Aba,you can't say what rules Otis broke! Otis was in charge after Eddie left!

That would be the day!
I was not thinking of Otis or anyone in particular when I quoted the article of Hubie Brown. The facts of the article are useful to me in speeches I have to give and apply to everyone and anyone and to all aspects of life.
Harry McGilberry was comparing the Temptations' preparations to that of an athlete in the NBA. I thought in view of the other Temptations' remarks to Maurice that Harry's comments extended to both the physicality of the demands and the mental preparedness of life as a Tempt and as an NBA player.
Otis had nothing to do with it. The same analogy would work for life as a chef, as a ditch digger, as a dress designer. You name it. The article applies to all life.

How can the person who makes the rules, break the rules? I guess that's possible....but how do you punish yourself? I guess he could fine himself 50 cents....

In the early days, every member enforced different rules, when Otis missed a step,he paid Paul. Now I don't blame him for holding all the cards.Just as long as he dosen't try to join the Review. ;D

it is interesting to note that memphis is now 7 and 3 in their last 10 games. if they can continue to learn, adhere and grow under coach borwn, they will definitely shine in comparison to their dismal 0 and 15 or so start. follow the rules! aba is a man to be proud of. i am.

Once again...I say who's in charge here? There is no question that Hubie is in charge. But if you listen to Mike, Eddie and then Otis assumed the role of leader. If you believe that Otis started the Temptations along with whoever then it must be Otis as the ring leader under those circumstances.
Those rules apply to all walks of life as you say Janebse. I say this....your attitude directly affects your effort. Show me a bad attitude and I'll show you someone not giving a good effort.

the sixers must not be listening to coach because they lost to utah horribly. they only scored 69 points. iverson had 13 points. and they've lost 5 road games in a row. celtics lost another road game, too. only the nets won tonight on the road. i like the way byron scott has his team flowing. they have a groove that took them to the finals last year, and with my struggling lakers in jeopardy, the nets may go all the way.
sacramento lost at home in ot to the jail blazers. chris webber forgot to get a restraining order against them not allowing the thugs within a thousand feet of arco arena! ;D
knicks got creamed by mavericks. clippers were down by 19 and came within 1 point, but missed 4 of 5 free throws in the last minute and had 2 offensive fouls that should have been buckets and ended up losing by 7.
lakers killed denver- like denver is a real team. twolves got run over by the pistons. but garnett is incredible.

Ok, you say Otis paid Paul when he messed up, and also that when someone missed a note or a step, Paul came down hard on them afterwards. So who did Paul pay when he messed up?

When it came to being a Tempt, Paul never did ANYTHING wrong!!! That's why he was the definition of the moniker! The voice, the moves, the total package!
