Cadeho, I can say with absolute certainty that you are NOT the weirdest one here. That honor would go to (((((DBaby)))))). But of course I mean that as a term of endearment. Jane, you didn't like Boyz II Men's little shorts and sweater ensembles they used to sport? I always thought they looked pretty spiffy! But you're right about the boy bands today. That whole hip-hop look is in. But it works for them. Society is so much more laid-back these days. It's just like people who wear every-day clothes to Sunday morning church. Not MY way of doing it, but oh well, diversity is what makes the world go 'round. But you're right about the Tempts and their class. I was once, um, treated to seeing the O'Jays appear after the Tempts and boy was that a mistake! I've never felt the same about the O'Jays since then! You're from Alabama Jane! Me to! I knew there was a reason I liked you! Sing it with me now, "I was one of the chosen few to be born in Alabam'!" Anyway, I know what you mean about dialects. I grew up in Chattanooga and when the Aquarium opened, I worked for the Tourist bureau mailing information packets to people living in the Nashville, B'ham, and Atlanta TV markets. They'd see a commerical and then they'd call in and request a packet. I got to where I could tell what city they were in just by their accent BEFORE they would tell me where they lived. It's amazing. I'll take your word for it. I just know that O doesn't talk anything like any of my loved-ones who are from Detroit. But he's a bit older than them, so maybe that's a factor. And of course there's the whole effect of him being the second generation of the Great Northern Migration, but this post is already boring so I won't make it any more so.

I love to discuss language, and dialects are so fascinating. I love to research words and how they came into being. The subject is never boring to me.
You're right about the countless factors that goes into creating the individual idolect. One's parents and where they came from, the section of the country one lives in, where one was born and grew up, one's friends, one's educational background, one's occupation, one's sex and even the people to whom one is talking.
Eddie's accent changed depending on whom he was talking to..
I once said to a teacher in Alabama, "You're from Boston and at least one of your parents was Irish." I was right.

Chunky? When BOYS II MEN first appeared, some of their members were chunky. Chunky should never wear shorts.

Hey Jane, I agree completely about the accents. I never thought that Eddie sounded rural or country. I always thought his accent had a touch of class to it, and everytime I'd read about Eddie having a 'Bama accent, I thought I was the only one who thought that Eddie didn't sound country. I'm from Georgia, and I've often heard the heavy southern drawl accents. Eddie does indeed have a classy southern accent and not a very heavy country drawl. Ivory, talking about Detroit accents...you have to hear the Dramatics talk. They all grew up in Detroit (well L.J. grew up in another town in Michigan) so their accents differ with the Tempts.
...On second thought, anyone who has Street Gold has heard the Dramatics talk. Well, at least a couple of them.
Sukka, LOL about "O" town being an Otis shrine. That was too funny!
