Hey, Everyone...
This is Derek - a/k/a All5Voices from Tulsa, OK.
Here I have a review of the show they did on the Monday, January 15, 2006 @ 7:30pm, Tulsa, OK
The opening act was a great and well known sax player named Grady Nichols, who opened for them the last time they were here. His was about 40 minutes. In the front balcony, in the very middle seat, to my left was a drunk couple whose Mom was on the front row and who had touched or shook the hands of each of the Tempts at least 5 times. To my right was an elderly woman who kept clapping on the wrong beat although everyone around her was clapping on the right one. Then, the 'Main Event' came out. They wore yellow suits with off white shirts and matching yellow shoes. Terry must've had his Gensing & Cherios that day because he was the epitome of precision. Ron was in great comedic form. On 'Just My Imagination', he said he coudn't afford more than 5 children after Terry asked the question. They entered the stage with an up tempo song - 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' (TWYDTTYD). The first of about 18 total selections for the night. G.C. did most of the lead parts including David/Dennis/Ali/Theo leads. The highlights of the night were many. During the breakdown dance part of TWYDTTYD, we yelled at the way they all did it as though they were in their 20s again. It was funny when Otis explained the 1st single from their 'Phoenix Rising' album in 1998 called 'Stay'. He went through the story and asked the women "Hey, Ladies! Will you please.....Stay?" Then the 'My Girl' bass line started. Over half the audience stood up, screamed, and applauded. That's when everyone who didn't know that 'Stay' used a sample of it, wasn't listening, or both, started saying "Awww, come on. They're playing with us". Then they ran off a long string of hits that were mostly led by G.C. - 'Ain't Too Proud...', ' (I Know) I'm Losing You', ' Just My Imagination', 'Can't Get Next To You', 'I Wish It Would Rain', 'Ball Of Confusion', Papa ...'. They took sort of a jam break with the band playing while joking and speaking randomly it seems, they introduced Billie Bullock of Star Direction, whom Otis says now is a resident of hometown of Tulsa, OK. After which they did the introductions of the band and themselves, of course with Otis getting the standing ovation as soon as Ron said ..."If it wasn't for this man..." Then they took a more classic turn - ' Ol Man River' was wonderfully done. Ron missed the introduction the 1st time (not that obvious to everyone). But the band kept on and looped back around. Joe turned it out. I'll have to say that he gave more to it than Harry McGilberry did. They also did 'The Girl's Alright With Me', 'It's Growing', ' Since I Lost My Baby', which Terry blew it up. In the middle of the song, Terry was on 1 knee with the others singing '...Whatchu gon do Terry?" Then he jumped up as though he were thrown by a spring going into his ad lib part. I'm glad he finally got a lead all to himself. I've read from some of you that he jams that song. But I had no idea. They of course did ' My Girl ' where they had nearly everyone standing and singing, followed by another standing ovation. 'Treat Here Like A Lady' was fit in somewhere in there. After the Temptations left at stage left, and returned for another ovation, the band jammed for about 10 minutes with the guitar player doing a solo. They were so good, most of the audience stayed for that.
