No, I didn't drive all the way to Wisconsin, although I would have. It's a review of the concert from a convert of mine, so there may be some factual errors. ;D
"Got there about 8 and bought my $28 ticket. The
concert was in the Upper Dells Ballroom - your typical
large hotel convention type facility. Doors were
open, but no one inside, so I wandered around the
casino for a bit until my brain exploded and then it
was show time.
My walk-up purchase seat was in the 7th row on the
left edge of the stage - essentially right in front of
David Sea about 20' away - a terrific spot to watch a
terrific show. The crowd was about 1/3 black, 1/3
white and 1/3 older gambler types who looked liked
they wandered in by sheer chance. About 6-700 people
overall - place was ¾ filled.
The band came out first - horn section looking proper
in the tuxes while the rest were wearing a stylish
reverse tuxedo - black shirts and white coats. The
organist gave a nice intro as the lights flashed and
dry ice swirled and there they were - The Temptations!
The group had on these snazzy, pinkish peach-colored
coats with white sequined swirls, white shirt and
pants and white ties with stripes to match the coats.
After the preliminary intros, they launched into
"Don't Look Back" and then a medley of the "classic
hits" - the medley theme was repeated several times -
they'd sing half a classic and then half of another
classic before doing a full song..."Ain't too proud to
Beg", "Just my Imagination", "I'm Losing You', "Gonna
make you love me", "TWYDTTYD" and several others
were done this way..I wanted the whole parts of all of
'em - but then if they had done that, the show would
still be going...
Crowd got into it pretty quickly, but after the first
medley set, Dennis launched into "Papa was a rolling
Stone" and the audience really came alive and started
grooving - the band was super tight during this song
and David really got the crowd going with that quick
clapping part during the chorus.
After another medley, it was the first of the solos -
David Sea did a very nice version of Lady Soul
and sang directly to a couple of the women who did the
swooning thing. Mike Patillo, the bass, got
to do "Rainy Night in Georgia" which was fabulous,
even if his voice did overwhelm the sound system a
bit. By this time, the dance steps were flying and
the ties were off and the shirts unbuttoned - except
David, who kept his tie on the entire show.
When Mike finished, they then sang "Cloud 9" which the
crowd really responded to as well - they seemed to
like the "bassier" songs for some reason. Dennis gave
the band some props and made fun of the "white boy"
horn section before they launched into "You are my
Everything" which featured the falsetto's solo (my words: Chris Arnold) - can't remember his name at all - but he was darn good.
Another medley set and then David did an incredible
version of "Wish it would rain" that knocked my socks
off - a lot of interaction with the crowd and someone
did a nice job of echoing him during the song - David
really seemed to like that as he started singing
to/with him for a couple of minutes..very well done..
More medley, a great version of "Can't get Next to
you" - fired up crowd and the band introduction time-
the bassist was quite good as the leader of the band -
and then Dennis did a bit about how grateful he was to
have been part of the band...he talked about Paul and
David and Eddie and Blue and the history of the group
- naturally, Otis was NOT mentioned. (My words: Maybe because he's not dead?) heh..and how
privileged he was to have been part of the
Temptations. He then started to solo sing "God Bless
America" of all songs - did it in a gospel style that
was terrific, but obviously taxed him and his
equipment - Dennis had problems with his pickup mic
most of the night.
As this song wound down, Dennis walked over to David
and said something while the band segued into "My
Girl" and then Dennis walked off stage...David took
over and motioned the audience to get off their butts
and start dancing - something many of us has wanted to
do all night - and then waved the crowd forward right
up to the stage where the remaining 4 singers of the
group did a long and wonderful version of this song
and pointed at various female members of the people
there gathered at their feet. When the song was done,
David thanked us and said good night and then the four
of them stayed and talked to us for a few minutes - I
even got to shake David Sea's hand as I thanked him
for a terrific show!!!!!!!!!!
Don't know what happened with Dennis - maybe that's
part of their normal routine - but he sang so well
during the show, but looked a bit tired right at the
end...he and David did this bit where they'd walk away
from the solo microphone a few feet and then sing
towards it - a way cool effect that really showcased
the power and passion in their voices...
Overall, it was a tremendous show, in a somewhat
unlikely setting. The crowd was very enthusiastic and
applauded long and loud after each song and especially
after the solo efforts. The dance steps were great
and the band tight. They really seemed to enjoy
themselves and I know I sure did!!!!!!!!!!! Lasted
about an hour and a half with no intermission
whatsoever - just them singing and dancing and having
a great time - a most excellent show and one I would
love to see again."
I love bringing in another sheep to the fold.
