Almost six years after becoming a fan of the Tempts, I finally got to see them. I bought my ticket last Friday for the Gold Circle seating (300 seats close to the stage) at Innsbrook Pavillion. I didn't want to be far from the stage laying on a blanket or renting a lawn chair... knowing me I would have stood the whole time.
So, I was all set to go. Earlier in the week the weather was going to be perfect for an outside show. Then as the days went by, the forecast called for storms, severe storms. I would not let this keep me from the Tempts and it didn't. Luckily the storm passed as I was on the way there and it cleared out after that.
So, the show started about 6:30 with the Mystic Soul Bubbas who covered songs like "It's Alright," "Funky Broadway," and "Stubborn Kind of Fellow." They weren't bad at all and they set the tone for the night. They wrapped up at 7:26 and the Tempts came out at 7:57.
You know, only the Tempts can pull off what looked like lavender suits. The crowd couldn't wait to see them and seeing glimpses of them offstage excited those of us close enough to see.
They started off with "TWYDTTYD" and I noticed then that Terry loves to dance. He danced the whole night with explosive energy (and his suit was soaked when he left the stage). The curious thing I noticed too was Otis sitting. As Ruffian said, he'd had surgery recently, but Otis didn't let that stop him from making the moves unified. My verdict on GC is wow. He fits the mold to me and he was great the whole concert. I've never heard Ron sing the classics other than on Motown 25. He sang with class and although he doesn't exactly sound like Eddie on "Just My Imagination," he's still spectacular. He passed the crowd part of "Just My Imagination" and... well... we fumbled. I know for me, all the lyrics decided to go bye-bye... I guess my mind was just awestruck. Joe certainly sounds very close to Melvin and there is something about them basses that make women lose it. I wish I was one! Otis tried... it still worked!
The first set of music was enjoyable ("The Way You Do the Things You Do", "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," Ball of Confusion", "I Wish It Would Rain," Just my Imagination," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," Standing on the Top," "Get Ready," "Stay," and Treat Her Like a Lady") but the second really got the crowd singing and the concert went to another level ("Memories," "I'll Be in Trouble," "It's Growing," "Please Return Your Love to Me," "Since I Lost My Baby," "The Girl's Alright with Me," "Don't Look Back," "All I Need, " "Beauty's Only Skin Deep," My Girl" (no guests from the audience), and "I'm Losing You"). With those songs, I was ready to party and so was the crowd. The show ended at 9:16 with the Tempts dancing off the stage. We were expecting an encore, but the show was over :crying.
I had a great time and I really wish they'd release another live album. It was a pleasure to finally be in the presence of the Temptations and I know I'm an amateur compared to most of you here. I wish they came back to meet people. I stayed around until most of the crowd had left and I didn't see anyone. Oh well. I think of this as just the first and maybe I'll get a chance to actually meet them. Ruffian, is the set above what they did for your concert? And (to anyone) is this pretty standard of their song choice they perform? I didn't expect to here many of the songs in the second part of the show and I expected to hear more current songs. I simply had a great time. Now, to get a ticket for Prince in August!

(Although shorter since they are sharing the bill with the Four Tops.) They didn't do a "Meet and Greet" at our show either. Great review, Cadeho! So glad you had a good time!!!! Peach Talking herself out of forking out the money for another show. :bonk:

Yes,this is the standard, just like I've been saying. Nothing has changed. I'm surprised that this is your first time seeing them. GC is no joke,I'm glad you got to see him more important..I'm glad that you enjoyed him.He is a veteran showman, just what the group needed.Ron is good, let's hope he gets some leads on the new cd. I hope he has a song that he wrote on the cd. Glad you enjoyed the show.

((Cadeho)) I thought you were asking each of us to relate our 1st Temptations concert. I see you weren't. But as I read your great review, it's interesting to note that more than half the tunes they did in April '04 they could have (but didn't) performed at the 1st Tempts concert I saw, back in Sept '67!!!!!! All the other tunes you named I've seen them do in the years since, and I haven't seen them in about 3 or 4 years! They don't do "Fifty/FiFty Love" ? What does that say about them staying current? I thought folks say they had some hits on "Ear" and "Awesome".........Tell me the truth cause........" I Gotta Know Now".........Peace

Hey,seems like Mikey knows what goes on at Otis'groups shows. How does he do it? Knowledge is power. Otis' group relying on "days gone by"..like they say the Review does. I don't see the difference. Well,a slight one...Dennis has four replacements singing with him...Otis has four replacements singing FOR him. :laughing

Thanks you all. Ivory, what will I have done? Probably pass out like a little girl at a Michael Jackson concert. I'd definitely shake hands, congratulate them on a great show, get autographs, and if I had time ask a few questions. Maybe Otis can let me sing behind a curtain... the mystery voice of the 6th Temptation...!

Hi Cadeho - I am so glad you enjoyed the first time seeing the Temptations perform. I so agree with your review of the Temptations concert.
I have stated before - the first time I bought tickets for the Temptations - wound up being a concert with Richard Street. The concert was advertised as "The Temptations" and the tickets also stated "The Temptations" - Richard was not mentioned at all. So when I bought the tickets - I thought I was going to see Otis's Group. I had front row seats. Much to my surprise - It was a Richard Street concert. Much to my surprise - the Concert was totally fantastic.
I was called up on stage to sing and dance with Richard to "My Girl" - which was so wonderful - "I can now die a happy Woman - LOL!
About a year or two later - I got to see Otis with his Group - which was during the time Bo was still in the line-up. I had front row seats for that concert too.
Harry was not there for that concert- due to illness. Otis had just had knee surgery - and spent a lot of time sitting on a stool - but he was keeping up with the "Moves" - I call it "Stool Dancing".
The song line-up was quite similar to the one you stated in the concert you saw. We were quite surprised that the newer songs they have came out with - were not included in the concert.
Bo was a big hit during the concert - and the Women sitting in the front row - showed Bo a lot of love.
During the time - that the Group was being introduced (mid-way through the concert) Ron introduced Otis - and along with the Woman who had front row seats - lots of other Women made their way down front - and they all got down on their knees and were bowing down to Otis.
I was the only one to bring Otis's book (the original book) to sign. Since I was sitting in the front row - right in front of Otis - he saw that I had brought the book - and he kept pointing at me and smiling.
At the end of the concert - before Otis walked off the stage - he pointed to me again - to say - bring that book up for me to sign - which I did. As soon as I approached the stage with my book - and as Otis was signing it - all of a sudden - there was a RUSH of people all around me trying to get a signature from Otis. As I stated in a back post on this subject - people were trying to have Otis sign blank pieces of paper and their Current CD. Otis signed the CD's but would not sign the blank pieces of paper or autograph books.
The concert was SO GOOD - I will never forget it - and hope I get to see them perform again.
I put the book along with the pen Otis signed with - and put it in a sealed plastic bag - to save forever.
I have quite a bit of Temptation memorabilia - that will be "Willed" to my adult Daughter - and I am sure will be worth some money.
I found your review of the Concert - quite REFRESHING - and once again - SO VERY GLAD YOU GOT TO THE SEE OTIS'S GROUP PERFORM LIVE - AND SO GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE CONCERT SO MUCH!
