Hi,
I just got back from the Tempts show at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, MA- what a great time! Started off meeting their musical director Al- nice guy, who I had met before at their show at UConn in December. He mentioned that they were going to be touring with the OJays this summer... is that right? I bought his CD- not bad... sort of a smooth jazz thing.
Anyway, the playlist was flawless- it moved very well... except for Otis- Ron later explained that the original Temp had leg surgery... ok, so he's entitled to take it easy- he's one of the originals for God's sake! He sat on a chair for a good part of the concert, but followed the hand gestures and swayed a bit. They were quite good... highlights? "I'm Losing You," "I Wish It Would Rain," "It's Growing," "Ball of Confusion," one of the Eddie classics (I think it was "Please Return Your Love to Me), "Get Ready," "Standing on the Top," "Memories," and "Stay"- that's a really good one... anywhere I can get an mp3 (or hear a sound file) of that? I'm more of an old school fan... didn't realize some of their later stuff had some kick to it...
Otis did his usual spokesman routine- showing the book, the "My Girl" CD... this always strikes me as rather amusing. They mentioned their latest CD is due out in June, but didn't play the new song (that one also sounds alright by the way).
The crowd loved them... and the opening act was brilliant- the Persuasions... all accapella- great stuff- received a couple standing ovations- "Me Besame Mucho" was fantastic!
After the show I decided to hang out behind the theater- good idea- I had a chance to meet Ron, one of the other new guys (Ed?), and... Otis! I had my copy of his book and he kindly signed it for me. I didn't get a chance to talk too much to him as they were heading out the door, but I told him that the Tempts had become a real inspiration to me. And to think... I only had a basic idea of who they were over a year ago...
Great night... luckily, there are a few more shows in the area for me to attend in June...
