Ahhhhhh....we're back....I'm exhausted!! But I had to do my little review while it was still fresh in my mind. I jotted notes on a napkin at breakfast today as things came to me. First, let me start out by saying the Temptations were fabulous!! Perfection, pretty much... so that when you read the other details within, you don't think I didn't like them. I did!!!! So, now that I have gotten that out of the way.....
The show was at the Universal Lending Pavilion, which is basically like an outdoor nightclub. Very cool... and it was a beautiful Colorado night....perfect weather, neither too hot or too cold. Must say, I agonized for days on what to wear and ended up feeling underdressed. Started out with a foul-mouthed comedian....had to take Anna on a tour of the other places close by until his act was finished. Just minutes before the Temps came on (9:00), a huge gust of wind came up and a smell of rain. I thought, "Oh no, here is that front they told us about." Yet, as quickly as it came, it was gone. That was it. One gust...... on to the show.
The Temptations came on stage to opening bars of "The Way You Do the Things You Do" dressed in, I would say, midnight blue suits with white satin shirts. (At first I thought they were black, but the more I looked at them I would say they were dark blue.) From where we were sitting (front row, just to the right--but stage left) we had a good view of G.C. most of the night. (I kept thinking, "Oh, it could have been Bo." ;D Sorry.... just had to say that.)
Song line up...the usual suspects, all the hits *except* they did not do "You're My Everything," which surprised me. A few pleasant surprises, at least to me, were "I'll Be In Trouble," "Ball of Confusion," "All I Need," "Since I Left My Baby," and "Please Return Your Love to Me." (Only half of that last one.) Two 90s tunes... "Stay" as well as "Some Enchanted Evening." Well, 90s for *them* but an old song. Hee.
Favorite parts of the evening....getting a few genuine smiles from Otis....and a lot of interaction *later* in the show with G.C. I think what tickled them the most was how myself and the lady next to me knew *every single word.* And how I freaked out when "Please Return Your Love to Me" started...Otis got this big grin on his face and then shook his head. I was sitting by a die-hard Temps fan, albeit a die-hard DENNIS fan. She had seen the Review in May, the same time I had seen them. We both came feeling a bit wary....I never got the chance to ask her of her thoughts after the show, as we were *both* wanting to find a way to get autographs. ;D She was a lot of fun to sit by, though.... very enthusiastic and didn't make *me* feel so out of place. ONCE AGAIN I was surrounded by stick in the mud people SITTING through the whole damn show....and I felt stuck in my seat so as not to have my behind in their faces. ;D As Anna said, "You were BESERK, Mom....just plain crazy." And I was. I did have a fabulous time... but it was bittersweet, which I will explain later........
My G.C. opinion....the guy sounded great. I do see nerves on him still, though....especially in the beginning. He wouldn't even look at the first few rows for about 2-4 songs. I could tell he wasn't relaxed. After about 15 minutes or so, he started to respond more to the audience, instead of just singing FOR us. (If that makes sense.) I don't like a performer so much as I like an interacter, but that's just me........ However, the altitude and dryness of Colorado can sap the life and strength out of the toughest folks, and it did the Temptations. They kept it up for most of the show....amazingly energetic and didn't disappoint. But by the time they did the last song "(I Know) I'm Losing You," G.C.'s voice was truly fried. I felt sorry for him, as there was nothing he could do.... Colorado is merciless that way. But Terry...I have read people saying something was wrong with his voice? Not this night... he was fantastic!! And they would have blown most 20 year olds AWAY. I could have done without the too-hip silly pelvic thrusting during, I think it was, "Stay." Otis looked really silly doing those!
So what was bittersweet about the night? I left feeling sad, instead of happy like I was when I left the Review. I couldn't figure out what it was until this morning, then it dawned on me. (And it wasn't just because they didn't have a meet and greet. I knew they were probably way too exhausted to even consider having one. And I don't think it was that "post-concert high letdown" either. ) When you go see the Review, you *know* they're not the Temptations. They're Dennis' group. And they have to prove themselves, as they don't have that name "THE TEMPTATIONS" as their reputation. But when you see the Temptations, you know it's the Temps.... you *expect* the Temps.... and I left sad knowing there was no longer a David, an Eddie, a Paul or a Melvin...and knowing there was never going to be. Yes, they were good. Yes, they were a *form* of the Temptations. But it will never be what it was *no matter how good anyone else is* in that group today. They had a magic!!! With the Review, you don't wait to see Eddie, David, etc. With the Temps....I kept waiting. I hope that makes sense. You WAIT because it's THE TEMPTATIONS, and that's the group that's near and dear to my heart. Also, because of the professionalism of the Temptations, I didn't feel they had the audience repoire that the Review had...and I like that personal quality. There was so much more interaction with Dennis, David Sea, etc., whereas the Temptations were more polished. I guess it depends on your preference. The Review just tried harder, you know? They had to....and I liked that. They wanted to win us over... invite us to their camp . The Temptations.... well, I wonder if they think, "We don't have to win them over. We're the Temptations!"
I know what some of you may say....when you're the Temptations, you're perfection. Why try harder? Well, because there is an audience there... and I want to feel that the group cares about whether we're having a good time. That is what I felt was missing... and I hope I don't get flamed too much for that one. Just one woman's opinion, and not necessarily gospel or how it is *every night.*
Oh, one other thing.... I think Anna and I were the *only* people in the front row that actually PAID for their tickets. When I looked at the clueless people that obviously won their tickets and weren't fanatics, I thought, "What a waste of a good seat." I think the local radio stations need to stop buying out the front rows for contests. Personally, if I was a Temptation, I'd rather see BESERK MANIACS in the front row like myself , rather than the dull people that were there. And maybe that explains part of what I wrote up there.
Lastly....no audience participation on "My Girl." Rats. And that's my review of the Temptations, such as it is. Any questions? I know I missed something! Thanks for letting me babble on for this long. ;D
