Edafan,
Eager to hear your review after you see the August 7th concert.
People have been responding favorably to GC and say that he fits in well as a Tempt.
Curiously, many have been commenting on Theo with the Tops, some saying they should be called "Theo and the Tops." Others that Theo looks more Tempt than Top. And still others that he screams more than sings with the result that people got up and left. (The Tempts had gone on earlier).
Waiting to hear your educated/educator's view. In reading previous reviews from this summer, it is obvious that it is "how well a singer fits in with a group" is as important, if not more so, than whether the person can sing.
And that reminds me of both Otis's and Eddie's comments that both Jimmy and David had excellent voices but David "fit in better" with the Tempts.

That is a polite way of saying that David sang better, and performed better than Jimmy, which he did.David gave them something that Jimmy didn't have the ability to...STARPOWER ! Theo & the Tops....if Levi didn't get that....nobody else will. I've seen Theo with the Tops...Levi is very much missed..and nobody was thinking Theo & The Tops! Not many knew that Theo was a Temptation at one time. But Nobody will ever think of it as Theo & The Tops..unless you do away with all the music listeners over 14. ;D

Mike,
Hate to disappoint you but Eddie said specifically that David did not sing better than Jimmy.

Well, thos people had smoked a bunch of crack before they came to the show and lost their ability to appreciate talent.

Edafan's review of Temptations, 4 Tops, Ojays on 8/7/03 at Fleetboston Pavillion
First things first - had a great dinner at Jimmy's right next door - seafood casserole, so much I couldn't finish it, done to perfection, then it started to rain, a short walk to under the cover in the 3rd row stage right.
comedian first 20 minutes = very good
Next since I'm a teacher I'll grade them 4 Tops = C+ 4 Tops band and arranger = F Ojays = A Temptations = A+
It is a great show, well worth the money. 4 Tops, Theo is great, but the show needs correography and way less volume. You could not hear the harmonies because of the makeup of the band. Literally it was painful to listen, and it made you really appreciate the Ojays set and the very talented Al McKenzie music director of the Temptations. The 4 tops band was horrible because they tried to overpower the singers. God bless Theo because he really tried. The best thing about the set was when Duke talked about Levi and how he was trying to get better and back to performing. The 4 Tops need an Al McKenzie for sure. I loved listening to Theo, but you get tired of hearing him try to be heard over the band. Ojays = I really never was a fan of them, but I am now. Eddie Levert is quite a showman. The other 2 are great. They just put alot of energy into the show and the audience responds. Temptations = I love Bo - But G C Cameron is great. He is a great lead singer period. Wow Otis does know talent. Terry sang one lead and Ron did his high tenor leads. But back to G C, I got to shake his hand at the end and I said to him "You are great" Almost makes you think that this show could not have been better. Now here's one that will make the hair rise on your little head - remember Otis's statement that the previous group(with Bo) is as good as the original6(don't forget Al). Well if that is so, Otis, this group is better, mainly because of G C. He is a showman. And he can sing. It is hard to think of anyone other than David or Dennis who could have done better. He is up in that class of performer. The second set of lesser sung hits ( Memories, Since I lost my Baby ) was a great addition. O K 80's 90's 00's fans. I do like Ali alot. and I want to see him live. The set was pretty much the same as reported in earlier strands. love edafan

When I saw the Tops with the Tempts in October, the result was the same. The Tops band waaay too loud. And perhaps Theo's screaming effect is the result of trying to be heard over the band. But that beautiful voice is not heard, all that's heard is the screaming/shouting. I was glad the Tempts had brought their own band. I thought the Tops' band or arranger had made a mistake until the concert this summer when much of the same reactions were being held by viewers.
The O'Jays insisted on the third spot, feeling they would get the most attention there, in the Whispers, Tops, O'Jays and Temptatoins rotation every time with the Tempts and Tops alternating between 2nd and 3rd. My personal thought was that the O'Jays wanted to get more recognition. Not sure why Tops and Tempts went along with it unless it was, perchance, a Motown request. There certainly has been a lot of emphasis on Motown lately with many artists (not formerly associated with or thought of as Motown) recording Motown songs. Just a guess here.
Edafan, I just love you. When you gave the Tempts an A+, your review thrilled me. I know that everyone has different tastes. I know that I don't like some singers that other people love. But even knowing all that, I want everyone to enjoy the Temptations the way I do and to hear and see how very unique they are and how deserving of their legendary status. I knew you would give an honest review. That's all anyone can ask.
An interesting note to me is that at several concerts this year I have sat next to people who were seeing the Otis Temptations for the first time. One group had seen Dennis' group, the other group did not mention which group they had seen and I did not ask them for several reasons. But each group asked me if the Otis group was professional since they did not regard the groups they had seen as being as professional as they expected the Temptations would be, and they wanted to know if they would disappointed again. In each case my response was the same. I told them to watch the show and afterwards tell me what they thought. I did not tell them what I thought. I did not tell them what to expect. I wanted to know their honest reaction. It was such an unusual question that I was honestly interested in what their reaction would be.
In all cases they were awed by the Otis Temptations, and when I asked them if they had found them professional their answers were, "Oh, my, yes." Or words to that effect. They were truly awed, and they had found whatever professional sense they were looking for.
I am reminded of seeing the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team perform on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Awesome is the only way to describe it. And that's the way the Tempts perform. The show doesn't ramble; each one knows his part and does it. It reminds me of hearing the 1966 TEMPTATIONS LIVE audio CD. They go from one song/dance to another. It's a fast-paced show, leaving the audience secure in the knowledge that these entertainers know where they are going.
The Tops show did not give that impression. One person critiqued that Obie's clowning drove her out of her mind. And I agreed. The Tops just wandered all over the stage, and Obie was too much of a clown and not enough of a singer.

Now for the BIG question. It's time to discuss the important things of life. And I think Ivory will agree with me here.
What will the Tempts wear tonight at Radio City Music Hall?
I just got to thinking what Ivory would add to the venue if she appeared at Radio City Music Hall with her Temptation purse. In a way it's a shame it's not at Lincoln Center so Ivory could walk down that staircase with her purse.

Ha ha! But if I was at Radio City I'd want to wear a Rockette (sp?) costume! Yep, you'd have the world's shortest Temptation on stage with the world's shortest Rockette!!!!
