"The Tempts in Chattanooga, June 8, 2003" or "Ivory's Cigar Box Purse Goes to the Fair" sleepy .............. sleepy............. so sleepy................ here's a thought............ why don't I just post some photos for y'all and you can figure out what happened? ;D This is where we sat............... These were the GOOD seats. The stage was a barge on the river. I'm showing you this first so you'll appreciate the following photos. Even though their quality isn't the best, you can see they came out pretty decent considering. Ron sings while the rest of the guys wonder, "Hmmm.......... I wonder can the crowd see us from so far away? " Suddenly, in the middle of the show, Otis spyed me, he said, "Look! There's Ivory Fair!" Ron said, "Where? I don't see her?" All together the other four pointed to me and said, "There, see her?" "Oh yes," Ron said, "She's the one over there eating a funnel cake. Hey Ivory, bring me some of that!!!" ;D And there I was, enjoying a big plate of warm, sugar coated fried bread!!! Yum!!!! I said, "Y'all can't have no funnel cake!!! You'll get powdered sugar all over your suits and you know you can't get that stuff off!!!! " I think that's what happened anyway, but like I said, I'm sleepy. I'll try to go into more detail tomorrow...............

Yeah Sukka, something like that......... Anyway, where was I? Ok, I got up at 5:30am Sunday morning, a pretty amazing feat considering I went to bed at 6:15am (ha ha.) I had to make a two hour drive from Nashville to Chattanooga and get there in time for church. I head out, it looked like split pea soup out there. There was SO much fog. We've had two of the most fatal fog-related accidents in the area so I drove with caution. At this time, I'd like to recite the poem I learned about fog in the 2nd grade........ Fog
Fog comes on little cat feet, It sits looking over harbour and city and then moves on.It was about the only thing I learned in the 2nd grade, I take a lot of pride in it. Ok, so I manage to make my way through the fog and get to church on time ( "church on time!") Say hey to everyone, everyone remarks that I only came to see the Tempts, I lie and say "no, they're just incidental ;D " but of course no one believed me. After church my parents and I ate big fat Mexican and I ate so much I thought I was gonna die!!!! Then a few hours later moms and I get all dolled up and we head back to evening service (yes, I had on more clothes at church than the above photo indicates.) Now an amazing thing happened at both services........... at Sunday school we talked about temptations and the different kinds and how to avoid them, then the Sunday night sermon was about different kinds of temptations and how to avoid them (my father didn't preach that sermon so that's why it was weird) and we capped off the night by singing a few verses of "Yield Not to Temptation." I PROMISE that's what happened. Ok, on to the show................

The venue is an annual music festival that is held in downtown Chattanooga on the banks of the Tennessee river. ( riverbendfestival.com/2003/default.html ) The Tempts were to be on the main stage, the "Coca Cola" stage which is actually a big barge (see above photo.) In order to not have to park a million miles away and walk to the thing, we parked several blocks down at the famous Chattanooga ChooChoo (http://www.choochoo.com/index.shtml ) then we caught an electric shuttle bus which took us to Riverbend. Now I was on a mission, no, not to cut Bo's hair off, but to find the holy grail of Riverbend dining, the infamous steak on a stick. I was HUNGRY!!!! With some time to kill before the show started, we went on our hunt. Well, we made the tragic mistake everyone makes when going to anything like this, where large crowds are involved, we went right. Well, there was nothing but crappy food to the right. Not knowing what else we'd find, I settled for a slice of pizza. It cost $20. ;D Mom wasn't hungry so we decide to just go find our seats. Back we walk through the crowd and make our way to where we ended up. Satisfied that we'd found it and with an hour to spare, we decide to wander around some more. This is what else we found........... 1. our own private port-a-johns!!!! Yes!!!!! 2. booths selling steak on a stick!!!! DARN IT!!!!!! I was stuffed, so no steak on a stick for me. Mom opted for a corn dog and then, after going back to our seats, we split a funnel cake. About 9pm, the MC came out, sang a song about an eagle while a video tape of eagles played on the Jumbo-tron above. Then, the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, who were going to accompany the Tempts came out and played the National Anthem. I thought that would have been the perfect time for my future husband, CWO Ronald Young, Jr. former POW and American hero to come out and propose to me, but no such luck. www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/05/14/60II/main553850.shtmlAfter that moment left us all swollen with patriotism, the conductor of the symphony annouced "Since you all have waited SO long, we're gonna take this time to bore you with some other stuff." (paraphrased) Now, don't get me wrong, I'm proud of my home-town symphony, but if I wanted to hear the symphony, I would have gone to hear the symphony. Well, the symphony does their thing and then finish. All the while the Jumbo-tron shows a photo of the Tempts with a message scrolling by saying, "The show will start in just a few minutes..........." When I realized the mics and stools weren't even on the stage, I knew we were gonna be there a while. After about 15 minutes, the crowd started to restless. A father decides to entertain the crowd by having his kids scream "TEMPATIONS!!!!!" and "SING MY GIRL!!!!!!!!" it was cute ............ the first time, but not the 18th. .......... After the kids calmed down, then bubba behind me decided to start telling racist jokes. Needless to say, as far as I was concerned, the Tempts coulnd't get on stage soon enough..............

Ok............. a year later........... Wait! I forgot something!!!! This was my imfamous Temptations-themed cigar box purse's first outing to a show. (http://temptsinfo.proboards10.com/index.cgi?board=lounge&action=display&thread=1046455134 ) Every female from the ages of 5 to 85 remarked that it was "cute" and that I must be a big fan!!! I said, "yes, and after that funnel cake, I'm even bigger" (ha ha) Anyway, a year later, the Tempts show up clad in their "bananna peelin'" mustard colored suits. I'm assuming they chose those as a tribute to all the chili dogs I ate last week and the mustard that topped them. Under the suits were white shirts with kind of a black ocelot print. The shirts had ruffels on the front and on the cuff. I wasn't feeling them. The majority of the show proceeded as normal, same songs, same moves same old same old. It was pretty much uneventful until the end. Now at some point I realized that they have included this new medley of some of the classic Tempts ALMOST hit songs like "Beauty" "Don't Look Back" "Since I Lost My Baby" etc. which I hadn't heard yet. Needless to say I got excited. After hearing them do it, all I can say is "SCREW MIKEY!!!! The current Tempts can sing the classic songs if the wanna!!!!" because they did an OUTSTANDING job!!!!! Ron and Bo did most of it, Terry sang one song, a Ruffin lead, but it escapes me at the moment. But what they sang, they kicked natural hind end on!!!!! Of course all of it led up to what I'll cherish as one of my most memorable concert moments......... "LOSING YOU!!!!! OOOOOOH!!!By the time they got to "Losing You" they asked the crowd to get up, but there wasn't much need as most of the crowd was up already!!!!! I have waited SO long to hear them do Losing You and it was well worth the wait. Amazing! Simply amazing!!!!!!!!!! After hearing them do these songs, I'm of the opinion that they could either a. get rid of songs like "Ball of Confusion" and others to be able to devote more time to the ones they sang medly-style or b. just 30 seconds of ALL of their best songs over the past 40 years. ;D That would work for me!!!! Well, after Losing You, it was time for My Girl, then the standard non-singing folks brough on stage to p** me off!!!! That was over soon enough, Otis did the cut throat sign meaning it was time to pack it up and go home. And just as quickly as they'd come, they were gone. Mom and I still had tokens left (that's what you bought food with, tokens, not cash) so we finished off the night with some ice cream and a virgin Pina Colada. On the bus back, another woman noticed my purse and added to the chorus of "you must be a really big fan!" "You could say that." I said. ~the end~

Great review and pics ((((((Ivory))))))!!! Now, we have seen pictures of the venue and the show. We have seen pictures of the famous cigar-box purse. Have we seen pictures of the important cigar-box purse actually at the show it was meant to go to? NO we have not!! This is a necessary adjunct, as otherwise we will have no proof that the cigar box purse was really there....see what I mean? I mean, have we ever seen the purse and the tempts in the same place at the same time? NO! Coinky-dink? hmmmm...

"Banana Peelin' Suits" ALRIGHT! Hey Ivory, you've done it again. I especially like the pre fixe temptations related sermon and music. Sort of a "tsk tsk" before the show. I've been to the Chattanooga Choo Choo, but it has been over 25 years, so I'm sure much has changed. My friend has a shop down there not too far called "Blue Skies". I'm sorry you didn't find "steak on a stick". We'll have to make up for that with dinner before the NP show. That funnel cake shot was priceless. That dress looks like a Lilly Pulitzer. Very nice outfit. I'm looking forward to hearing the new medley...your description just whet our appetites. Good job and hope you made it home safe and sound.

Have we seen pictures of the important cigar-box purse actually at the show it was meant to go to? NO we have not!! LOL! Well, there is one shot in existance, but I blinked when it was being taken and my tummy is poking out from all of the fried fat I'd eaten. So will you ever see the photo?............. Only if you can bribe it out of my mommy!!!!! David Ruffin sang "Losing You." I thought you knew that Kalisa!!! Seriously, Bo did. Did he sing it when you saw them? I've been to the Chattanooga Choo Choo, but it has been over 25 years, Yeah, that whole area has really developed over the past 10 years because of the Aquarium and all of the tourism money that it brought. It's a LOT prettier down there now. I'll have to come back later and check the photos IVI'm working on getting y'all a little movie clip to watch..........

Here are a few more random thoughts........
When they did the group introduction thing, Ron like he always does announced that Terry was from Birmingham. Being so close to Birmingham, that brought some cheers from the audience. But then Ron added that it was the "home of American Idol winner Ruben Studdard." I know he did it because American Idol is so big and Rueben so popular and the fact that they were in B'ham the night before may have had something to do with it, but I thought how sad it was that Ruben's getting more recognition than Eddie, Paul, Dennis etc.
I don't remember them being very tight on their Losing You choreography. You know the part where they bend and clap? Seems they weren't together but the above footage says otherwise, maybe I'm misremembering.
Otis announced that his book was for sale, and the latest "Greatest Hits" CD was for sale. Nothing was said about Bo's new CD.
