Hope someone can set me straight. I understood that when the Tops decided to again go back to Four Tops, that Theo came in to replace Lawrence, and as such, was the lead singer.
If I understand correctly, the Tops always had just ONE lead singer who was consistently the lead. Unlike the Tempts where any of the five might be the lead singer. And in the early videos and records I have, this is exactly what happened. I've been surprised as I found old tapes and videos that Melvin and Otis had a number of leads.
Now you keep mentioning Ronnie as a replacement for Levi, and then you mention Ronnie as the lead and Theo as the lead, and I am lost. What did Levi have? There appears to be much doubt that he can and/or will come back. Who came in first, Ronnie or Theo?
I am wondering if Theo is thinking of a solo career. His release of his new CD might suggest this.
When the Tempts and the Tops are together, is it always the group that comes on last that seems to do best? Are they inspired by the first group's show? You know the old battle of the bands.

As a rule there was just one lead for The Four Tops, Levi Stubbs, although Lawrence Payton did sing lead on a few numbers and both he and Obie were/are songwriters. Theo came on to replace Lawrence and Theo's leads were very slow in coming...I mean he had portions of a few songs. Simple Game was one. Then, when Levi went off the road, Theo replaced Levi and Ronnie came on to replace Theo. Levi had always sung "Ask the Lonely", until he left and now Ronnie sings lead on that song. Right now, Theo sings the bulk of leads.

Well, I must be all mixed up because in every video I've seen Lawrence was singing the lead.
I liked Theo's voice when he was with the Tempts, especially on the "For Lovers Only" album. However, I am such a loyal Tempts fan that I could never even imagine preferring a non-Tempt.
Ivory, you posted my favorite David Ruffin picture. He looks so cuddable there. The only conclusion I can draw is that Otis is right. David was a very complex person. And I'd add a person without self-discipline. Still, in that picture is the David I'd like to have seen be the reall David, warm and friendly.

This IS Harry, during his rendition of "Ol' Man River." Ron playing to the audience while O and Bo look on. Theo and Duke exit the stage Did I mention, Theo fine!!!!

I agree! I just love the stick artwork Ivory. No camera blur, no second guessing. You can make em what you wanem to be....sought of like Cloud Nine, hun? ;D
But your pictures did come out much better than mine I'll try to load the few I have later. Maybe just one cause they're not a clear (cheap camera).

I saw some pictures posted, can't remember by whom, what concert, or where, but it was fairly recent. At this concert Bo was wearing glasses. Since I didn't see him wearing glasses in June, I wondered if this was something recent or for some reason the conditions that evening required glasses.

Sukka,
That was clever. I love humor that grows out of the situation and is quick and to the point...and clean.

Jane, Bo's been wearing glasses for as long as I can remember. Not sure why he wears them some times and not others, for the same reason as everyone else does I guess.
You'll notice in the "How Could He Hurt You" video, he has them on in some shots but not others.
