Paso Robles, CA..Midstate Fair.
To begin with, unfortunately there were sound problems. The lead mike seemed flat and dead and almost silent during the first show. Dennis was obviously frustrated, and apologetic. A slightly different problem during the second show, with feedback difficulties.
BUT…the shows were their usual top-notch, energetic entertainment. All the favorites, “Standing on the Top”, “Don’t Look Back”, “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”, “Get Ready”, “Beauty is only Skin deep” and more…David Sea getting ovations during “Lady Soul” and “I wish it would Rain”. Long standing ovation for Dennis’s “God Bless America” , my first time hearing him do it. New to me too was Chris and David ripping it up with “You’re My Everything”, a personal favorite of mine. Another ‘new to me’ was David singing “My Baby”. They did NOT have time to do “You’ll Lose a Precious Love”, which I was hoping for…I guess I’ll just have to find another show to go to…DARN!! ;D ;D
For the fashion police, during the first show they were wearing long, sleeveless vest/jackets in varying colors, with white shirts underneath, ruffled cuffs and collars. David Sea was in my signature color, Teal. Pants, shoes and socks to match. Chris was in gold, Bernard in deep purple, Mike in baby blue, and Dennis in bright red. Second show was a gold-colored suit/uniform with fringed epaulettes and some sort of check pattern in the weave, gold on gold.
Second show was pushed up half an hour earlier than advertised…they were on the schedule from hell. Arriving in Los Angeles this morning, 4 hour bus ride to Paso Robles getting there about 4 p.m., show time at 6:30, over at 7:30, sign autographs shake hands change clothes start second show at 8 p.m., must be ON THE ROAD by 8:55 p.m. to make their flight to the next venue, a private show in Milawaukee tonite.
Sooo…second show was approximately 20 minutes shorter, there was no Tribute portion nor “God Bless America”, nor “You’re my everything”. However, there were special moments in the second show that I and other audience members will never forget, as well as one young boy. While he was singing the vamp on “Rain” (“Let it rain all ooooover the land…yeah yeah”), David Sea was reaching out to audience members, shaking hands from the stage etc. A boy about 7 or 8 wanted to shake his hand. He was on crutches, with a leg having been amputated. David reached down, hauled him up in his arms crutch and all, and did a little vocal training. It was wonderful to see the look on the boy’s face as he got applause for his “response” to David’s “call”…and his grin when he came off-stage lit up the whole amphitheater! Mom’s face was streaming tears…as was mine by that point.
Another thing that hubby and I took pleasure in noting, and I know all of you will too…There were quite a few young people in the crowd, in the 11-13 age group. We saw them singing along…they knew the words and were GROOVIN’ to it! Even songs that don’t get airplay like “Don’t Look Back”, as well as the better known “Just My Imagination” and “My Girl”. And the ones they didn’t know, they were STILL groovin’! There’s some good parents out there , bringing them up right!
Hopefully, some pictures will follow early next week.
