Accents fascinate me. There's this big aquarium in Chattanooga where I'm from. When it opened, I worked for the Convention and Visitors Bureau. My job was to answer phone calls from people requesting information packets and take their address. We were running commercials in Atlanta, Nashville and Birmingham. I got to where I could tell where people were calling from before they told me. Just like with anything, there's no ONE "southern accent" there's varitions of it. I've always liked Georgia accents, there's more of a looser jaw and the muscles on the back of the throat are used more, words are elongated, sylabuls are added. On the contrary, I cannot stand middle Tennessee/Kentucky accents, they are very nasal and words are shortened. For example, a native of Nashville might say "NASHvull" in almost one syllabul where as someone from Atlanta might say "na'sh-VEEEEEL" We have towns here called "Lebanon" and "Shelbyville" which are pronounced "Lebnun" and "Shebvul" ........... of course my favorite is a suburb of Chattanooga, Ooltewah, the proper pronunciatin of which is "oool-ta-wah" but which all native Chattanoogans know as "Oooteywah"

Ain't that nice...a perm" And I hate the word soder...they say everything else with an "a" at the end (ie..fighta) but a word that actually ends in "a" they wanna add an er...country folks LOL...for the record....I love my country family but when this thread was made I just had to get on them...and it's maily this one aunt of mine and my mom, some people from Alabama managed to escape the countriness (my dad)

I thought that I would hurt myself laughing one time in a KMart. An older black man from Shelby, NC (near Charlotte) was talking to one of the customer service personnel about making a layaway payment for a relative. He kept telling her, "I been tryin to get a-holt of her all day and I jes ain't been able to get a-holt of her to git her lay-way ticket. Cain't I jes pay sumpin' on it any how?" I had tears rolling down my face from biting my lip.

I can relate to all the accents and southern ways of speaking, both my parents are from the south and it was strange growing up. You know as children, you speak like your parents until you start school..I lived and went to school in "ultra" suburbia...when I started school we were taught the "correct" way to pronunciate and use words, when I come home, I hear my mom and dad saying things like "come heeya gul, and go get dem duddy close (dirty clothes)". I'm thinkin', whoa, sum (something) aint right. As my schoolin' went on, I've learned to use the "at home" way of talking "at home" and my more educated grammer when out in the real world, that way I suppose I can say I'm bi-lingual... ;D

On another note, My mother (bless her heart), has this thing with the word "corn" and "cone", she'll say, "I'm gone cook some cone and beans for dinner." She'd also say "anybody want ice cream corns?" The thing was, she knew how to pronounce each word but could not switch them around in conversation... I've learned to just let it flow with her because I KNOW what she means, but my daughter, never fails to correct mom whenever she pronounces ANYTHING different from what she (my daughter) has learned. So the conversation between my mom and my daughter is hilarious. They get frustrated with one another, my mom misinterprets my daughter and vice versa..and it goes on and on...

I would love to hear the exchanges between your Mom and daughter, Classic!! Sounds too funny!!!!!! ;D I loved my country sounding dad..... the thing is, he grew up in Pocahontas, Iowa. I guess that's a little bit country. He talked like a lot of the people being mentioned, that's for sure!! And I sure do miss it. Peach

"You gon' eat yo' conebread?" (Y'all knew it was coming, didn't you?) ;D
I just noticed that when somebody's getting on my nerves, I say, "Go on, nah" instead of "now."
Ivory's story about the different accents reminded me of a conversation I had with Hype once. I said something about how I never really think much about different accents. If I were to talk to someone from up north, I would notice that he had a different way of speaking and pronouncing words, but if we were in the South, I wouldn't think he was from anywhere else. I think it's just because I'm terrible at distinguishing accents.
