i agree with you whole heartedly southern niece! especially since you read what the most popular baby names are- in fact 8 of 10 names for boys in 2002 were from the bible- david, joshua, daniel, matthew, etc. girls were emily and brianna, etc. so if there are a million joshuas, then we need an occasional anfernee and my kids have a friend named shikendrea. ... Sukka my daughter is a Briana with one (n) of course..you all are so right about those other hard to pronounce and hard to spell names..whew, and chances are, all those shaniqua's and dieesha's will be using some sort of nickname all through life to keep things simple...LOL, I've even shortened my daughter's name to Bri...to many syllables can wear you out when you're constantly having to call them for something.

And I believe that's why people think they're being unique when they give their children names it takes years to learn to spell,My real first name is not one that my parents made up the spelling on, it's a legitimate way to spell it, but it's not the most obvious way, so I know what you mean, I'm always having to spell it out. But, I have grown to like the unique spelling and, more importantly, I'm glad my name's not something common (not that it's wrong to have a common name, I'm just glad I'm the only one I know with mine.) I'm just tired of all of these cowboy names that are so popular with little boys now. Feel like I'm walking around in the Old West.

What REALLY bugs me is that all of the unique names I like get used up before I can have a kid. When I was in jr. high school, I liked Lauren and Morgan, not unique any more. Now everyone's starting to use up Isis and Lola. Darn it!!! I need to have a kid quick!!!!

Floneesha does sound like nasal spray!
I used to know a girl named Shekeybra...reminded me of an Egyptian bra! Where do parents come up with names like Quentarius, ShaLiqua, Dekeysha, Javorius, or other things like that? I wouldn't want to name my kids something common like Bob or Ann, yet I still couldn't give them a name they'd end up hating.

CLASSIC= you're doing great- i'd rather have your 10 good posts to my 500 silly ones!
IVORY= you have a kid as soon as your POW hero guy pops the question! he might want to have a say in the name-like junior!
DEEEVA- LOL! way too funny! our kids are christine, james, stephen, cheski(francesca) , and constance(conti). james doesn't go by jim or jimmy. stephen goes by stevie or steve.

well... my son does have an UNUSUAL name... Kyron D'Artagnan - yes, there's an apostrophe in it... but it's French, and that's the way the name is spelled. Read the Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas - he's the 4th Musketeer. My son's new daughter's name is Devanee Alejandra. Unique - but not ridiculous.

i like your son's name and your granddaughter's name.
i don't hate anybody's name so much as i think it makes it difficult for the child sometimes.
in 1976 when i was in colorado i met a U.N.C. student named cold blue steele from birmingham alabama- he hated his folks naming him that. we called him blue. his father mr. steele coincidentally had worked at the steel mill in birmingham, the ''pittsburgh of the south'' as it was known.

I'm so hung up on the meanings of names.... it took me 24 hours after the birth of Anna to name her. In fact, my mom knew her name *long* before I did. (When I was 6 months pregnant....long story, but maybe I'll share it sometime. God works in mysterious ways. ) Anyway, that's why she is named Anna Joy... I feel like names are blessings..... I really hate the fact that my full name is Wendy Nadine... Wendy means "The Wanderer" and Nadine means "Hope." So I guess that means, even if I never stay in one place for long, there is hope I'll settle down at some point. ;D I agree, Ivory, about the cowboy/western/place name type names. I'm surrounded by that in Colorado!!! I've always had a leaning towards Biblical names, but not the most obvious ones. (Except I guess Anna is fairly common.... but we didn't have any choice there, if you get my drift. ) I love the name Canaan for a boy.... and even Solomon, because of the wisdom tied to it. However, my guess is he would get his butt kicked with that name. Peach

Mine means "Bitter Grace" so that's kinda weird. I don't generally think I'm a very bitter person. Maybe I TASTE bitterly? ........... But I am DEFINATELY not graceful. I always thought it was funny that Shaquille means "little warrior." Ha ha, LITTLE! My name was inspired by one of my father's friends when he grew up but is also basically the same as my maternal grandmother's. Now, I've thought about continuing the tradition of having three generation of women in my family with the first name "Mary" (Mary Annie, Mary Joyce, Marianne) and then adding with that my paternal grandmother's name to make Mary Irene but I can't decided if "Irene" still sounds like an old lady name, or if it's come back into "coolness." I also like the fact that both "Irene" and "Marianne" are song names ("Goodnight Irene" "Marianne oh Marianne oh won't you marry me...") and I've thought about choosing a name from a song, hence Lola "whatever Lola wants, Lola gets..." and there are others but they escape me at the moment. I guess perhaps I shouldn't worry about it until the kids actually START coming. ;D The only boy name I've ever thought about is "David." I wonder if that's a sign. My parents never picked out any boy names. Mr. Ivory likes Bible names too. I kid him that if we had kids, they'd be named "Methusala" or "Jocabeme."

There is also that Four Seasons song "C'Mon Marianne." He was cheating on her, and he's trying to beg her to forgive him and take him back...... And the Kinks song Lola..... "I'm not drunk, but I can't understand why she walks like a woman and talks like a man, oh my Lola...." But I know what you mean about liking old-fashioned, names, Ivory... I have always loved the name Violet. I wanted to name Anna that, but it didn't fit her after she was born. (You really have to check the baby out before you tack names on them. I never understood having the names "set in stone." Sometimes, they just don't fit.) Anna had a sweet little moon face when she was born. She needed a sweet, simple little name. I loved the name Maya...but she was definitely not a Maya. I loved Gracelynn, too. (Get it? bwahahahaha) But it was "too big" for the sweet little moon face. Since I doubt I'll have any more children, I use my names on pets. ;D My cat is named Lily.... I just love flower names. Peach

Yeah, I like Violet too. That has that '20's/'30's feel to it that, again, almost sounds like a granny name but is almost cool again. I'm starting to like "Vivienne." Anything that sounds like the name of a strong yet sensual woman with a little bit of a dangerous side. Oh there's LOTS of "Mary Ann" songs. There's "Jimmy Loves Marianne" "So Long Marianne" (which I've always said should be played at my funeral, ha ha) that song by Boston that goes, "I see my Marianne walking away...." but I have to admit, besides the most famous "Marianne oh Marianne......" song my favorite has to be "Oh how I miss you Marianne, I'd love to taste your love again, my sail's a-waiting for the wind.... Marianne!" which was recorded by a certain Motown group we all know and love. Now that's one great thing about pets, you can throw away all your inhibitions and name them whatever the heck you want to. I always wanted to have two beagles and name them Hank (as in Williams Sr.) and Buddy (as in Holly.) I'd also love to have a boy and girl cat and name them Buffy and Jody after the kids on "Family Affair." I really should have named my cat Daniel Jody 'cause he looks so much like him........

LOL! I'm dying over here! Yes, he looks just like Jody!! "Uncle BIWWuh." (How he said "Uncle Bill.") Poor pets.... I wasn't too daring with Lily. She is pure white..... Anna's choice was Daisy....but Lily was sexier. I have had cats named Squeebles, Pandora, and Tyler..... the last two have Aerosmith roots. ;D The first one I think is from a Stephen King book....an old boyfriend picked that one. We are way off-topic, huh? Vivienne is a great name!!! Peach

You have a solid white cat too? Cool! My mother SWEARS that I bleach my "Effie." His name (yes, he is a HE) is "The Ineffable Marshmallow Cream and Graham" is from the musical "Cats." In one song, they talk about cats having three different kinds of names and one of those names is ineffable, meaning you can't put it into words. Effie is a big old sissy boy looking cats and I COULD NOT come up with a name for him so hence "Ineffable." Marshallow cream and graham was a snack my mom gave me when I was little. That part should be obvious. Yeah, we have kinda turned this from the "words I hate" thread to the "words I love" thread haven't we.
