Indulge me as I begin this column with a gush. I recently took my mom to see Gladys Knight and the opening act was former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards and the Temptations Review. Edwards’ presence in Los Angeles doing Temptations music was, alone, justification for my A-section seats. But when I saw Ali Ollie Woodson – the only other living star lead singer of The Temptations - sharing the stage with him, too, I was in seventh heaven. They got three standing ovations!
This leads me to Ali Ollie’s new solo CD (Never Give Up) which is split right down the middle between vintage soul music and some sexy slabs of the new-fangled stuff. The man is singing at his absolute prime – soulful and assured - from a daring cover of original Temptations tenor David Ruffin’s “Walk Away From Love,” to the adoring “Heaven Chose You To Be My Valentine” and the relationship ending song “Somebody” to the bumpin’ modern times soul of “Heaven,” the West Coast hip hop flair of “I Don’t Wanna Be Right,” the jazzy “Next 2 U” and “Fya” (as in “fire”). And “U Owe it All to Love” is an Urban AC summer hit begging to be discovered.
Some of the production was synthesized on a budget and somewhat dated, but Ali Ollie Woodson is vocally on point – from Points A to Z. U and your boo will want to be somewhere in between.

Well, now...I gotta hear that.
For my money, Ali Woodson's second only to David Ruffin with respect to former-Tempts frontmen. Of course, I'm taking David's solo material into account, which -- vocally -- blows away anything he ever recorded with the Temptations.
If Ali's voice is anywhere near what it was in the '80s, that would be a real treat to hear.

Shout outs to (((((((((((((((((((Everybody))))))))))))))))))))))!
Yesterday I just received a copy of the "Euge Grove - born 2 groove" cd with ((((Ali))) singing "I Love You More Than you'll Ever Know". Oh Ali sounds so words to descirbe him! The song is jazzy and bluesy. I think anyone who Enjoys Ali's singing will Enjoy the song!! I can't get enough of hearing him sing! There is information on his myspace page on ordering the cd!
(((Beej)))), you can hear a very short clip of Ali singing "Walk Away". I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole song and new cd!
