TAKE A LISTEN TO REFLECTIONS Steve Jones Burlington Free Press/GNS
The Temptations, "Reflections" Forty years ago, when they were helping build the Motown legend, The Temptations paused to get "In a Mellow Mood" with the standards of the day.
Hits by their colleagues then -- The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Miracles, the Jackson 5 and others -- are now standards in their own right, and once again the classy quintet reworks old favorites with their sumptuous harmonies.
Standouts include the stirring "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" (first done by Temptations David Ruffin's brother Jimmy), an energetic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," a jazzy "Never Can Say Goodbye" and a tender "I'll Be There."
Not all of the songs translate well. You miss Smokey's yearning on "Ooo Baby Baby," for instance, but overall these reflections hold up well in comparison.
