One of my favorite Tempts recordings is "Fan the Flame" ("Wish It Would Rain" Ruffin lead)........ www.uploadit.org/ivoryfair/fantheflame.rmIn the song are the following lines........ Once a wise man said to me, This advice I'll give you free, A woman lives on vanity so fan the flame.
A woman needs love and praises, So give her a little each day. And when she has those emotional phases, Just give her one tender kiss to make everything ok.Now *I* think there's some validity to these words (they certainly describe me) but I have a feeling certain feminists groups would disagree with me. There's NO WAY the song could be recorded now. What do you all think? Are the words true or sexist?

Ivory--I agree with you...I am the same way. Just give me a little attention, I'm happy. I know that song would never be made today, and that's is too bad. I think women with a very feminist slant have really shot themselves in the foot. Yes, there is validity to the idea that women should be paid equally if they do the same work as a man. But it has gotten to the point that men really do not know what to do with us. They aren't sure if it is OK to pay us compliments (such as "you look nice today"), open doors for us, give up a seat, etc. I know of instances where I saw a man opening a door for a woman, only to get berated for it. Now, I personally like to be treated like a lady and men are much more hesitant to do it than they used to be. What have we done, girls? Ivory, you are wise beyond your years.

Yea, you said it, McRibs..... we've confused them! It's a healthy balance, as I always say....... treat me like a lady, open the door for me, I love that!! But don't demean me or treat me like an object. (The line about "giving a little kiss" to make everything okay..... yea, right. Don't patronize me.) ;D But yes, I love feeling like the "Belle of the Ball."

I like the song. It's nice. I think the sentiment of the song is right there. I don't know if it's patronzing, though it may come off that way. I do think that the lyrics could be said today. I think could because the idea It is talking about keeping all the good stuff going.

I think it's not sexist, because the emphasis on the feminine aspects are used in an appropriate context. If I had a boss (which I'm lucky enough not to have) and he would use the same emphasis on femininity at the work place, I would most likely talk to him about the issue. Now, when it comes to such acts of courtesy as holding the door for me and treating me like a "princess" -- I love it. The problem some men seem to have is that they pick the wrong women to shower with their chivalry. I think it's mainly the "wanna-be-feminists" who react in such a rude way as kalisa dscribed it. After all, even we feminists want to be liked. By the wrong women I mean those who wear business suits because it makes them look professional and sophisticated, not because they're really into business, or women who want to appear extremely sexy and send the message that they are not into "romantic nonsense." Just my observations ... not science yet True feminism, in my opinion, goes much deeper than that. I could go on and on ...

As far as the door opening etc. I think that it's a matter of common sense and courtesy. If a man and I both come to a door at the same time I would be just as likely to open the door for him. I think that a lot of good things that could have come from the feminist movement (and the ERA if it would have passed :crying) got overlooked because a lot of people got caught up in trivial things like holding doors, would women be drafted, and OMG we will have to use unisex bathrooms. While getting hung up on this the ERA slipped away. One of the biggest misconceptions is that a feminist can't be a lady too. Melvin (movie character) was half right IMO more than "a little attention" Tammie needed to be shown some respect. Of course feminists NEVER get OFF TOPIC, . Sorry, rant over. Tess
