LOS ANGELES, Jul 26, 2002 (ENTERTAINMENT WIRE) -- In every decade, Berry Gordy's Motown has both reflected and led popular tastes. In the '80s, celebrating its 25th anniversary and rediscovered by "The Big Chill" generation, Motown rocked -- and the hits just kept coming. Two dozen of them are heard on "The Best Of Motown 1980's Vol. 1" and "Vol. 2" editions of "20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection" (Motown/UME), released August 27, 2002, digitally remastered sequels to the series' pairs of volumes dedicated to the '60s and '70s.
"The Best Of Motown 1980's Vol. 1" features 11 Top 10 R&B hits, seven of them #1. Diana Ross earned her biggest-selling solo album, featuring "I'm Coming Out," #6 R&B/#9 pop and #1 on the dance floor. Smokey Robinson had his biggest solo number with "Being With You" (#1 R&B/#2 pop). The Temptations hit #2 R&B with "Treat Her Like A Lady," and former member Dennis Edwards did the same with "Don't Look Any Further" (with Siedah Garrett).
The Commodores, without Lionel Richie, won their first Grammy for the #1 R&B/#3 pop "Nightshift." Two Jacksons were also heard: A 10-year-old track from Michael, "Farewell My Summer Love," was remixed into the Top 40 (pop and R&B) and Jermaine hit #1 R&B/#9 pop with the Stevie Wonder collaboration "Let's Get Serious." A newer family, DeBarge, enjoyed their biggest hit with "Rhythm Of The Night" (#1 R&B/#3 pop), and a member of Motown founder Berry Gordy's brood charted when son Rockwell took "Somebody's Watching Me" #1 R&B/#2 pop. Funk rocked with Rick James' #1 R&B/#40 pop "Give It To Me Baby" and "In My House" (#3 R&B/#7 pop) from proteges the Mary Jane Girls, as well as the Dazz Band with the Grammy-winning #1 R&B/#5 pop "Let It Whip."
"The Best Of Motown 1980's Vol. 2" spotlights eight R&B Top 10s. Ballads scored for Diana (#14 R&B/#9 pop "It's My Turn") and Billy Preston & Syreeta (#4 pop "With You I'm Born Again"), while energetic soul hit for the Commodores (#5 R&B/#8 pop "Lady (You Bring Me Up)," with Richie), Smokey (#2 R&B/#8 pop "Just to See Her," his first Grammy), and Temptations (#4 R&B "Lady Soul"). The latter also sang on James' "Super Freak" (#3 R&B/#16 pop). In turn, his protege Teena Marie released "Square Biz" (#3 R&B). Families again contribute: DeBarge with "All This Love" (#5 R&B/#17 pop), El DeBarge with the #7 R&B "Love Always" and The Boys with the #1 R&B/#13 pop "Dial My Heart." Oddities? Charlene's "I've Never Been To Me" premiered in 1976, but a 1982 remix hit #3 pop. And a "Moonlighting" Bruce Willis, backed by the Pointer Sisters, went #20 R&B/#5 pop with a cover of "Respect Yourself."
After being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Mr. Gordy sold Motown to MCA, leaving behind an enduring musical legacy.
The series "20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection" features new "best of" albums from the most significant music artists of the past century.
